When Hell Froze Over: The I-95 Backup

Imagine it:  more than 24 hours cooped up inside a cramped metal box, with subfreezing temperatures just a thin glass wall away.  No food, water, medicine or bathroom.  Power, heat and connectivity only as long as the fuel and cellphone power hold out.  Children, pets, seniors, special needs individuals – no one is spared. That was the situation confronting hundreds of motorists caught in a massive traffic snarl on Interstate 95, the primary north/south artery up the East Coast, on Monday, January 3rd.

The problem started that afternoon when a pair of tractor trailers jackknifed in wintry conditions in Stafford County, Virginia, blocking the highway as a havoc of secondary accidents unfolded quickly behind them.  This led to a 50-mile backup that wasn’t fully cleared for over 24 hours, with little to no assistance rendered to trapped drivers.  Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) was one of those caught up in the fiasco, spending 27 hours on the road traveling back to DC from Richmond, normally a trip of two hours.

The stage was set by a Sun/Nemesis conjunction at 13 and 18 Capricorn, at the fulcrum of a T-Square with asteroids Snowdonia at 15 Libra and Storm at 19 Aries.  Nemesis is noted for throwing up blocks to progress (one of its keywords is “roadblocks”; in this case, quite literal!), while Snowdonia and Storm together portrayed the type of weather event involved.

Just to each side of this pattern, additional points fleshed out the story.  An opposition from asteroid Sturm at 1 Capricorn (German for “storm”) to asteroid Schneeweiss (German for “white snow”) at 8 Cancer reiterates the underlying cause.

I95 cover
Winter weather was the culprit in the I-95 debacle, with asteroids Snowdonia, Storm, Sturm (German for “storm”), Schneeweiss (German for “white snow”) and Winters all prominent on the day, interacting with asteroids Carr, Virginia and Stafford

Just past the Sun, Pluto at 26 Capricorn conjoins Mercury with asteroid NOT, at 1 and 2 Aquarius respectively.  Pluto tends toward devastating outcomes, Mercury rules cars and traffic and has affinities with weather as well, and NOT is a general disqualifier, a symbol of being unable to proceed.  This stellium anchors a Grand Cross composed of an opposition to asteroid Stafford at 29 Cancer with asteroid Still at 5 Aquarius, squaring asteroid Virginia at 27 Aries exactly opposed asteroid Winters at 27 Libra.  Remarkably, this identifies both the state (Virginia) and specific county (Stafford) where the backup occurred, while Still’s inclusion in the pattern denotes the stoppage, and Winters represents the season.

Two other points relate intimately to the Grand Cross, with asteroid d’Arrest at 27 Virgo, noted for cessation and restriction, exactly semisextile and inconjunct the Virginia/Winters axis, while asteroid Carr (phonetic match for “car”) at 12 Virgo is exactly semisquare and sesquiquadrate this same polarity.

I95 backup2
Nightfall brought no reprieve for the trapped motorists; indicators of a traffic stoppage in Stafford County included asteroids Stafford and Still conjunct, opposed Mercury with asteroid NOT – that’s star-speak for “nobody goin’ nowhere!”

Asteroid Still carves out an additional T-Square, including the opposition to Mercury/NOT, by a square to a pairing of asteroid Automedon with Uranus at 6 and 10 Taurus respectively.  Automedon is closest to “automobile”, and its stationary status, turning direct that very day, suggests it’s a valid celestial stand-in for vehicles, at least in this instance.   Automedon’s stationary status alone would suggest being immobile, even without Still lending support for that circumstance, while Uranus’ presence harkens back to the accident that started the disaster.   Saturn is also in the mix; at 12 Aquarius, it joins the Fixed T-Square with Mercury and NOT, representing the privation and hardship experienced by the trapped motorists.

d’Arrest at 27 Virgo also does double duty here, caught up in another T-Square with Neptune at 20 Pisces and asteroid Stucky at 20 Sagittarius.  “Stuck”y speaks for itself, while Neptune represents those victims in need of rescue, as well as the apparent confusion, delay and ineffectiveness of the response.

Yes, folks – Hell has officially frozen over.  So what’s next?

Sun Conjunct Venus: Cazimi Magic

Sun conjunct Venus

Sun conjunct Venus [18 Capricorn 43]

– January 9 2022 (00:44 GMT)

In ancient times, Venus was thought to be a star rather than a planet as she was so bright in the night sky – we witnessed Venus’ beauty in the night sky at the end of last year. Yet, Venus has now disappeared from view.

This is because Venus is reaching the mid-way point of her retrograde cycle which takes place this weekend, January 8th/9th 2022.

The mid-way point is significant because it’s when the Sun and Venus are at the exact same point in the zodiac. This conjunction of the Sun and Venus retrograde is a symbolic turning point and there’s magic in the moment the Sun & Venus unite.

This is called cazimi in astrology when a planet is illuminated by the rays of the Sun. The exact time of the Sun-Venus cazimi moment is 00:44 GMT tonight – the early hours of January 9th – but Venus will have her audience with the Sun for a few hours either side.

The Dance Of Venus

This is called an inferior conjunction and it’s the time when Venus is shifting from an evening star to a morning star in the night sky. In other words, Venus has disappeared from the sky after sunset and you will need to wake before sunrise to see Venus once she emerges again in a week or so.

Venus becomes invisible as she merges with the Sun and the symbolism suggests her descent into the Underworld. She disappears from sight and reappears reborn.

The first half of the retrograde cycle is more reflective, when you turn inwards for deep insight. You learn more about yourself, especially in relation to love, money and creativity, Venus’ themes.

The Sun illuminates Venus as they sit side by side in the zodiac, the mid-way point, and this is considered a rebirth moment. Venus is regathering her strength as she reconnects with her passion.

Venus The Harmoniser

The pattern that Venus makes in relation to the Sun and Earth in her long & complex journey is beautiful. There’s a perfect flow and symmetry and the resulting movement of Venus in relation to the earth resembles a 5 petalled-flower – see picture above. Ancient peoples called Venus the harmoniser.

There’s a lovely 5 minute video you can watch to show the Earth & Venus tango around the Sun. Click here to view the dance: Sun/Venus.

Venus is the planet of beauty as well as love. When either is in flow, you often experience a sense of awe and wonder. This is cosmic harmony, in tune with the universe, the perfect note, a flawless sequence.

Venus’ cycle through the universe is a feature of this cosmic order as the 8 year pattern repeats almost exactly. Which means if you want to know what this year’s Venus retrograde in Capricorn will bring into your life or how to work with it, look back to the events of December 2013/January 2014 and keep going back every 8 years.

There is a slight shift backwards in the zodiac so this perfect pattern doesn’t work going back into infinity but it is pretty accurate for the last few occasions.

Here’s the current cosmic pattern of Venus’ transit through Capricorn:

  • Venus enters Capricorn – November 5, 2021
  • Venus turns retrograde [26 Capricorn 29] – December 19, 2021
  • Sun conjunct Venus R [18 Capricorn 43] – January 9, 2022 [00:44 GMT]
  • Venus turns direct [112 Capricorn 05] – January 29, 2022
  • Venus leaves Capricorn – March 6, 2022

This Venus retrograde phase is more potent than usual because Venus entered the Underworld alongside Pluto who rules this domain. Venus is walking alongside this powerful God, who destroys and purges, who hides secrets and riches.

She will need all her warrior energy to emerge stronger and more powerful. The two planets, Venus and Pluto, will be side-by-side once again on March 3rd and this time they’re alongside Mars, the God of action and fury. It could be a remarkable couple of months.

Here’s a quick guide to the areas of your life that are highlighted during the Sun/Venus conjunction and Venus’ journey through the underworld. Read both your Sun & Ascendant sign:

  • Capricorn – personal goals & self image
  • Aquarius – solitude & secrets
  • Pisces – friends & wider society
  • Aries – career & status
  • Taurus – travel & study
  • Gemini – joint finances & sexuality
  • Cancer – love & relationships
  • Leo – job & health
  • Virgo – birth i.e. kids, romance, creative project
  • Libra – home & family
  • Scorpio – communication & ideas
  • Sagittarius – money & values

Use this week’s Sun/Venus cazimi conjunction to make the right connections, to ‘have your audience with the King’, seek illumination & enlightenment, honour love & beauty, & pray to the Goddess of harmony.
