Saturn Square Uranus: Dynamic Tension

Saturn square Uranus

Saturn Square Uranus – February 17, 2021 (19:04 GMT)

There is one major planetary aspect taking place throughout 2021 that includes both rulers of Aquarius, Saturn & Uranus.

These two important planets are complete opposites – Saturn represents tradition, governments, what’s already established and leans towards the past. Uranus represents rebellion & change, protest & freedom and looks towards the future. It’s a classic clash of the old v. the new.

The first square aspect takes place this week and events on the date itself may be relevant. Yet, as this planetary aspect takes place three times this year, it’s effectively a backdrop or theme of 2021.

The Myanmar coup on February 1st & subsequent protests is a classic example of how this astrology can play out in the world. Saturn-Uranus major aspects are often noticeable during periods of social reform.

Dynamic Tension

Square aspects create dynamic tension and it depends which planet dominates how it plays out in your own life. When Saturn’s stronger, there’s a fear of change and rules must be respected. When Uranus is stronger, there’s an urge to rebel, break the rules and challenge the status quo.

At the very least, both ends of the spectrum need to be considered. Ideally, you want to find a way to bring them together. Yet, this isn’t straightforward by any means.

Saturn in Aquarius doesn’t want to be part of the group but tells you how to live your life. Uranus in Taurus is a change advocate but refuses to join in to do what’s best for the whole. You can see the dilemma.

Change is rarely easy if it means letting go of the life we have grown used to. Change becomes even more of a challenge when different factions of society have opposing viewpoints. 2021 is turning out to be quite the ride.

Having an astrological perspective on life can help to reveal a deeper layer to our current situation. With so much fixed planetary energy right now, it’s even more important to stay open-minded, bear witness to what’s happening, listen to alternative viewpoints & think outside of the box to find solutions.

Restriction v. Freedom

On a personal level, look at where you are feeling held back or restricted (Saturn) and where you want to break free (Uranus). Try not to tip too far in either direction and remember that both planetary archetypes have value.

This planetary aspect is such important symbolism for our world view in 2021. When I read what the brilliant astrologer Charles Carter said about this pairing, I haven’t been able to forget it; “democratic in spirit, autocratic in method”. This is the danger/challenge of this powerful planetary combination.

Here are the dates & degrees of all three Saturn-Uranus squares – if you have planets/angles within 2 degrees of any of the four fixed star signs – Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius – you’ll be feeling this dynamic tension and conflict between opposing forces.

  • Saturn 7 Aquarius square Uranus 7 Taurus – February 17
  • Saturn 13 Aquarius square Uranus 13 Taurus – June 14
  • Saturn 11 Aquarius square Uranus 11 Taurus – December 24

Here’s an excerpt from my 2021 Horoscopes eBook that was written in October 2020 which reveals more. You can purchase the eBook via the navigation bar above.

“The immediate theme that springs to mind with the Saturn-Uranus square aspect is revolution. Uranus isn’t a planet that wants to be suppressed or constrained as it represents innovation, freedom & independence.

These clashes could see the individual stand up against governments or regimes, especially during the Saturn/Uranus clashes. We can already sense the differences in our society, the division, the things that don’t unite us.

There are people who want to stay safe and do what the experts say; there are other people who favour freedom over repression and don’t want to be told what to do.

Those people who want freedom of speech, thought & movement will be pushing for personal liberty. Doing what’s best for everyone v. doing what’s best for you & me will require a new perspective, a new way of looking at things.

What’s important to note from an astrological point of view is that both Aquarius and Taurus are fixed signs, notoriously stubborn. Fixed signs believe they’re right and lose sight of other people’s ideas, opinions or values. We need to be careful that we don’t become so rigid that we forget how to listen to other people’s points of view.

There will likely be scientific and technological breakthroughs but data security could be a big issue, along with what happens when technology or science breaks down.

Will the World Wide Web keep turning so we all stay connected? Or, will we need to pay close attention to the super-fast advancements in our world and not assume they’ll go on working automatically.

There could be a clash between the parts of society that want to return to ‘normal’ in 2021 and those that want to speed up the urgent need for change.

A good example is Extinction Rebellion whose protests are to demand urgent action to tackle climate change. Yet, many people don’t like these protests which disrupt their routines, their freedom.

Extinction Rebellion was formed in May 2018 when Uranus first moved into Taurus – we’re likely to see more protests, especially around climate change.

And, inevitably these major square aspects will bring changes to our money markets as Taurus rules money and expose the ever-increasing divide between the rich & the poor.

Protestors, rebel rousers, freedom lovers, modern thinkers, New Age advocates, alternative dreamers, geniuses, inventors, futuristic visionaries – Uranus encompasses them all. It’s going to be fascinating to see what protests, rebellions and innovations come tumbling out in 2021.”
