The astrology of Joe Rogan

Please be sure to read the entire post before commenting, and please limit your comments to the astrology. This post is not endorsement of Joe Rogan’s views, or a blanket approval of everything he has ever said.  As always, all viewpoints are welcomed, but any comments that serve only to inflame and do not add to the discussion will be deleted. Thank you for your cooperation!

If you haven’t watched Joe Rogan’s YouTube channel you likely have a very different impression of him than if you have.  If all you read is the headlines, you see a crazy man who embraces conspiracy theories and radical ideas. This is certainly a piece of the man, but if you dive into what he has produced as I have, you see a much more nuanced picture.

Joe Rogan was born with the Sun in Leo conjunct expansive Jupiter – a very fortunate placement which virtually ensures success, especially since these planets are in his 10th house of career and vocation. Leo is the sign of the Self – under the influence of Leo we need to be “seen” and recognized, but also, ultimately, to be the best person we can be.  Mercury, planet of communication, is right on the Midheaven which is a powerful point and denotes someone who is a strong communicator.  Saturn, planet of hard work and success, forms a harmonious trine to the Sun and Jupiter which helps to facilitate the discipline needed to work towards a goal. The main drive here is for fame and recognition, but there’s more.

Rogan was born in 1967 at the height of the conjunction of Uranus and Pluto, the planetary formation that brought us “the 60s.”  He narrowly escaped the emotional challenges (Saturn and Chiron opposed Uranus and Pluto) of the 1965-1966 period, so the transformational power of that big conjunction is able to operate freely.  Individuals born under this conjunction (between 1963-1968) generally experience an urgency to bring about a radical (Uranus) transformation (Pluto), and for Rogan this comes through his Mercury/Midheaven skills with communication. His Venus (relating to others) is a part of that conjunction, and his Venus is in the more modest sign of Virgo which would tone down some of the Leo tendency to be bombastic and attention-seeking.

There is a lot of fire in this chart, and fire is the element that promotes passion and enthusiasm. Three planets (plus Ceres) in Leo, and three planets, including Mars, in Scorpio which is one of the Mars-ruled signs. Saturn is in the other Mars-ruled sign, suggesting insecurities and doubts about his masculinity which can lead to overcompensation, especially in one’s younger years.  But Saturn is well placed in a trine to the Sun and Jupiter which ameliorates some of these difficulties. Still, the impetuosity of the fire element is clearly visible in Rogan’s personality.

The thing that prompted this post today was this article: Joe Rogan apologizes to Spotify and musicians.

In a nearly 10-minute long video posted on Instagram, Rogan said he is open to changes to the show such as booking more mainstream experts after having controversial ones and doing more research on certain topics. Rogan praised Spotify for its latest decision to add content advisories to any material mentioning Covid-19, and direct its users to public health sites for more information. He also thanked the platform for its support. …

“I’m not trying to promote misinformation, I’m not trying to be controversial,” Rogan added. “I’ve never tried to do anything with this podcast other than to just talk to people.”

We do have a time of birth for Rogan (thank you!) which shows that Libra is rising in the chart. The rising sign, or ascendant, shows the way in which we move through the world, and the influence to which we aspire and which we grow into during our lives. Libra is the sign of balance – the diplomat, the equalizer. Libra always tends toward the middle (full disclosure here: I myself have the Sun and a few other planets in Libra).  Libra also wants to be liked and please others, so with Libra rising, Rogan would not be a character like Russell Brand who is a provocateur and doesn’t care who he offends. Apology is a major tool in Libra’s arsenal in the effort to avoid offense.

If you watch Rogan’s podcasts you can see that he is genuinely interested in different points of view, even those that are clearly incorrect. As we have watched the “truth” about the Coronavirus unfold, we have seen things that were first said to be true later revealed to be false, and vice versa. As an astrologer who practices what some would call “pseudoscience” and “misinformation,” I may be particularly sensitive to the fear of information repression, but as an astrologer I also see the conflict over information as an expected part of the Saturn/Uranus square under which we operated throughout 2021 and which is still in force in 2022.  Both Saturn and Uranus are in difficult aspects to Rogan’s Leo and Scorpio planets, so he is at once being pulled to break out of restriction (Uranus) and also being hammered by authority figures (Saturn).  In the  meantime, his fame continues to grow because of controversy, rather than in spite of it.

New Moon in Aquarius, January 31, 2022

We’re in the midst of Aquarius season with a New Moon at 12° 20’ Aquarius and yet there are only three planets not in earth and water signs . . . the Sun, Moon and Saturn in Aquarius. And those three Aquarius planets are square to Uranus in Taurus. The one good thing about this fixed square is it celebrates the Aquarian tradition of letting our uniqueness shine forth for all to see.

This New Moon is the perfect opportunity to explore the “whys” behind our need to rebel against what we’re being told to do by those in authority. The Mercury-Pluto conjunction in Capricorn is still in force and Mercury is at a standstill preparing to station direct on Thursday, and we can use this incredible conjunction to discover the truth of the matter. Once we are dealing with accurate information, we can look within to see what emotions are running high and may be preventing us for making a more rational (Aquarius) choice. Keep in mind it is always a balancing act between protecting our sense of autonomy and following the rules (Saturn) of the collective we live within. Saturn conjoining the luminaries also suggests those who insist on doing the “cut off your nose to spite your face” thing stand a very good chance of facing instant karma.

All the rest of the aspects on this New Moon in Aquarius are harmonious and as such will act more like background music rather than getting in our faces.

The Mercury-Pluto conjunction in Capricorn is widely sextile Neptune in Pisces, perfect for introducing compassion and sensitivity to an otherwise hard-nosed combo. While we may not like the information the Mercury-Pluto conjunction reveals, Neptune suggests we make being kind and thoughtful a priority when we share that information.

Mars and Venus are now both in Capricorn and will be traveling fairly close together for quite some time. Now Mars is sextile Jupiter in Pisces and Venus is trine Uranus in Taurus. That makes this a very good time to work on improving all our relationships with others, whether they are our co-workers, lovers, family members, etc. The Mars-Jupiter sextile is a classic example of compassionate action, what we can do working with others to help those in need. The Venus-Uranus trine has been in play during the past week as Venus slowed to station direct a day or so ago. It is excellent for seeing our relationships in a new light and coming up with practical yet fun ways ways to please those we care about.

This New Moon in Aquarius is a refresher course in the area of life Aquarius rules, such as the society we live within, who we choose as allies, or like-minded people, to associate with, our sense of uniqueness, etc. The Saturn in Aquarius-Uranus in Taurus square has highlighted these issues for the past year, and this New Moon gives us an opportunity to make necessary course corrections. Like it or not, almost all of us live surrounded by people and choose to follow a set of rules that make it easier for everyone to navigate their society. It always works better if we as individuals choose to cooperate and treat others with respect and kindness. Another way to look at this New Moon is from astrologer David Crook of Stellar Insights Astrology. He says the January 31 New Moon (9:46 pm, PST) at 12* Aquarius that’s separating from a square with Uranus, and applying to a conjunction with Saturn, suggests an opportunity to make structural changes, and build back better. Let us use practicing kindness, tolerance and patience as our foundation to build a better tomorrow. Peace and love to all.

New Moon in Aquarius February 2022

The New Moon occurs at 05:46 (UT) on February 1, 2022 at 12°Aq19′. The New Moon is conjunct Saturn and square Uranus.

It’s a New Moon and a new start. This is the global 11th house, so we’re looking at seed moments around groups and networks, the wider community, society, political systems, humanitarian and progressive causes. In our own lives, we’re ready for a revolutionary new start that will open doors and invite us to do something different. We want new experiences to change our thinking. Aquarius is a sign that’s associated with the higher mind, God-mind. It’s a great time to brainstorm with other people. We need other people to get different ideas. If we’re stuck in our own thinking we can’t progress. If we don’t read any books or we don’t speak to new people; if we don’t take in any new information, we’re just going to keep doing the same thing.

The time may be right for a new beginning, but it needs to be slow. It needs to be considered and sensible with Saturn. Aquarius is brilliant, novel, genius, sometimes a little crazy and sometimes there is a need for those crazy ideas – but now is not one of those times! The calls for revolution and change are absolutely required. But how we do it is also very important. Saturn suggests that revolutionary change must be managed carefully. We can’t just upend the system and destabilise everything.

The Sabian symbol of this lunation is ‘A Barometer’. It makes me think about a game I used to play with friends as a child. One person hides something in a room and then everyone comes back in the room and starts looking for it. As soon as they move nearer to where that object is, the person who hid the item shouts ‘warmer you’re getting warmer!’ And then if they move away from it, they say ‘you’re getting colder, COLDER!

It feels like we’ve got to be in tune and connected, gauging the temperature of the room. We need to be observant of the conditions that we find ourselves in. Is it too hot? Is it too cold? What is happening here? Because the barometer is going to give us an indication of how best to act in that circumstance.

If the barometer falls, indicating low pressure, I know that I need to take an umbrella with me because it’s probably going to rain. But if the barometer goes up, suggesting high pressure, I know that I can leave the umbrella at home because it’s going to be fine and sunny. So, the barometer is about observing and checking the conditions. The barometer gives us a prediction. It’s not necessarily absolute or completely right every single time but there are indications as to how things might unfold. Therefore, we need to be observant; pay attention to the conditions that we find ourselves in, because that will govern what we do next. Saturn advocates a practical, scientific attitude, to be real, to be present. That way, we can choose the very best response and be ready for whatever life throws at us.
