Saturn and Jupiter in Aquarius – The Great Conjunction

2020 began with a bang that has reverberated for the entire year. The conjunction between Saturn and Pluto has stayed in orb throughout (aside from a couple of weeks in May). Saturn and Pluto will finally move apart on December 26, 2020. Alongside the smash of the karmic reset button came the clash of a great crisis, symbolised by Jupiter’s conjunction to Pluto, three times this year too. Here we were presented with a huge opportunity for change, a potentially great transformation. This year is not going out quietly either as another massive conjunction will occur in December, just as the last echoes of Saturn and Pluto fall away.

Saturn enters Aquarius at 05:03 (UT) on December 17, 2020.

Jupiter enters Aquarius at 13:07 (UT) on December 19, 2020.

The Great Conjunction between Jupiter and Saturn will take place at 18:20 (UT) on December 21, 2020 at 00°Aq29′.

December 21, 2020 is also the date of the winter solstice in the Northern hemisphere which symbolises the return of the light. Not only that, this is also the date (in the UK) of the First Quarter Moon which will take place on the Aries point (0 Aries). This is also a potent degree, filled with vibrant potential and an uprush of energy. Another symbolic factor is that, religious or not, we all know the tale about the three wise men (astrologers!) who followed the great star that led them to the Christ child. Whether or not that star was a Jupiter-Saturn conjunction is up for debate but still, the story is embedded deep in the collective psyche. Given all the surrounding symbolism that accompanies the Great Conjunction, we are being told that this is a new beginning and a return to the light.

Jupiter and Saturn have been in orb of a conjunction since September 17, 2020 but the mix of these two has been wrapped up with Pluto. Jupiter and Pluto’s conjunction ends December 23, 2020. So, the Great conjunction between Jupiter and Saturn will still be imbued with the last vestiges of the Pluto energy, deepening and intensifying our experience of it.

Generally, Jupiter and Saturn meet around every 20 years and as they begin a new synodic cycle, society too enters a new chapter. Jupiter and Saturn are considered Social Planets. The placement of these two planets in the birth chart show something of how we move from our own personal world to connect with the wider world. This conjunction in 2020 however, is not just beginning a new chapter for society but a new era. For the next 200 years, Jupiter and Saturn will meet only in Air signs after meeting in earth signs since 1842.

There was however, one Great Conjunction in Libra in 1980 and this gave us a flavour of things to come. For the next 20 years until the next Jupiter and Saturn conjunction in 2000, we found new ways to connect and our technological world exploded. Air signs are associated with communication, mind and intellect. The Jupiter-Saturn conjunction in 2000 though was in materialistic Taurus and so between then and now we have seen the rise, fall and rise of the dot.com industry. Technology has continued to rapidly advance, but it has been driven by a desire to amass greater fortune. Material having has become the God that rules. How much money can I make with this website/new phone/new laptop?  Human connection has been lost in the midst…until now.

Aquarius is the last of the air signs. It is connected to the global 11th house and ruled by both Saturn (traditional) and Uranus (modern). Aquarius is Higher Mind, Uranus a higher vibration of Mercury. In Aquarius we are connected to ‘God mind’ receiving cosmic downloads straight into the brain. It’s not about feeling, it’s about thinking. It’s not so much about gut instinct and intuition but an instant and brilliant knowing.

Some people struggle to see the connection between disciplined Saturn and rebellious Aquarius, but we need rules and regulations for society to function as well as the freedom to express ourselves and the liberty to lead our own lives with Uranus. I also use the analogy of a scientist too – Uranus is mad but brilliant, haphazardly testing out wild theories generated by out of the box thinking. But science needs Saturn too – the one who is willing to test and test and test again to ensure the experiment worked. Saturn is method and order, preparation, caution.

Aquarius energy is considered to be cool, detached, friendly but sometimes aloof. It makes me think of glass, the high ‘ting’ of finger symbol or a pure note struck from a tuning fork. There is something crystal clear about Aquarius and we can see how Saturn can correlate to the stripped back, airy nature of this sign. If Aquarius was a room, maybe it would be a loft apartment, painted white, minimal furniture with a skylight to the clear blue sky above it. It makes me think of Iceland.

Aquarius season each year lasts from around January 21 – February 21 so certainly the icy season in the Northern hemisphere. It is during Aquarius time that we celebrate the Pagan festival of Imbolc and the Christian festival of Candlemas. Both these festivals, ancient and modern are connected to the idea of purification and cleansing. Imbolc means ‘in the belly’ and speaks of a time when the Earth is stirring with new life, even whilst the ground may still be covered with snow. At Candlemas, candles are blessed for the year – once again speaking of the idea of bringing back the light. It is said that this was also the time that Mary was allowed back in the church to be once again ‘purified’ after giving birth. As uncomfortable as that last symbolism is, we can easily see how much of Aquarius season is connected to the concept of cleansing and even perhaps a return to youthfulness – interesting as the previous sign Capricorn is associated with old age.

The symbol of Aquarius is the water bearer and the word Aquarius itself contains the word for water – ‘aqua’. It’s not that Aquarius is unfeeling, but it contains feelings – bearing water – to hold up, to contain, to allow for but not to be overwhelmed by. There is something distinctly rational about Aquarius, yet the flip side can be brutally cold. Aquarius also has an electrical quality which can both spark excitement and inspiration or simply ‘switch off’ if it’s not getting what it needs. Still, positively in Aquarius we find scientific acumen, a modern, progressive outlook. The global 11th house where Aquarius resides is about groups, networks, friends, the wider community, society, politics and humanitarian causes. It’s also a place we look to for our future hopes so there is a certain idealism around this sign too.

The Tarot card associated to Aquarius is the Star. In this image we see the water bearer pouring two jugs of water – one onto the Earth and the other into a pool. One foot is on the ground, one in the water. The woman is bare. Again, we have the idea of cleansing, being in touch with and yet not ruled by emotion. The brilliant stars, billions of miles away remind us of a wider connection to the cosmos only unlike the next sign Pisces, this is not about angels and merging with the whole – more it is about the wonder of the universe, the urge to answer the question ‘is it just us, are we alone?’.

The X Files began on September 10, 1993, when Saturn was last in Aquarius. The film Contact, which follows Jodie Foster as she is contacted by an alien race that helps her build a machine that will take her to their planet was released in 1997, when both Uranus and Jupiter were in Aquarius. One of the main lines from the movie was So if it’s just us… seems like an awful waste of space.”.

Aquarius in the rocket taking off and every scientist who helped to make it happen. It’s Walter  Bishop in Fringe, Einstein, Carl Sagan – and maybe the odd mad professor who experiments with whatever he can get his hands on. Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein had Pluto conjunct the North Node in Aquarius with Pluto anaretic to boot. I find myself chilled as I write that, wondering whether some prescience of my own sees humans too playing God by the time that Pluto once again reaches the 29th degree of Aquarius in 2042. Elon Musk, head of SpaceX has Mars conjunct the North Node in Aquarius. I imagine that we may hear a lot more from him during these next few years. Generally, I anticipate a lot more space news along with more science fiction being made. I also anticipate that as we move into this Aquarius era, we will see an explosion of scientific breakthroughs and the rise of the machines. Will sentient robots come of the back of this? It’s difficult to tell but then again, a robot that is more intelligent that a human can seem God-like even if it is soulless.

It’s not escaped my attention that as we stand on the edge of this Aquarius era, we have seen news stories about strange monoliths being found in Utah, Romania, California and The Isle of Wight. Whether an artist’s concept or a global joke (perhaps a little of both as Aquarius has a weird sense of humour!), the symbolism is fascinating. Most likely these monoliths are based off that from 2001, A Space Odyssey. If you haven’t seen the movie, (which by the way is brilliant!), The Monolith in the movie seems to represent and even trigger epic transitions in the history of human evolution, evolution of humans from ape-like beings to civilised people, hence the odyssey of humankind. Wikipedia. Just before Trump came to power, the news was full of people seeing scary clowns. Clown sightings tend to become prominent when the psyche of the collective is fearful. Now with the monolith symbolism in place, it feels like we’re not only being shown the potential for an epic transition and the evolution of civilisation, but also that we have the ability to endure.  The Star, and Aquarius, make us think ahead, consider the future we are creating and so this is part of the story for Jupiter and Saturn in Aquarius.

I’ve been calling the conjunction between Jupiter and Saturn ‘the Great Work’. We are beginning something now that will lay the foundation for the future, both in our own lives and collectively. The action of Saturn is to contract, the action of Jupiter is to expand. These two planets moving through Aquarius are going to give us different tests, challenges and opportunities yet all are connected to Aquarius themes. Positively, Jupiter and Saturn can work well together with Saturn curbing Jupiter’s excesses and Jupiter pushing Saturn to transcend doubts and limits. But as the conjunction between the two only lasts until February 2021, it may seem like we are having a duel journey.

With the inventive nature of Aquarius working via the scholarly energy of Jupiter, there certainly seems the potential for great discoveries during this time. It seems likely that this transit may also speak more of online tuition, particularly for universities. Increased communication and connection are also suggested but as Saturn will also be here, it is highly likely that this will be done under the rules of the ‘new normal’ sparked by the pandemic.

Saturn is certainly not touchy feely and Aquarius is a sign associated with distance (think again of the star being far, far away). I doubt we will see a return to our old ways during the transit of Saturn in Aquarius. Social distancing will become mainstream practice. Still, the great work we are doing here is about developing (Jupiter) stability (Saturn) as a society (Aquarius). Right now, we are fractured. The atmosphere is angry and divisive. The Pluto in Capricorn years, particularly this last year, have really exposed the underbelly of capitalism and brought out all kinds of toxic behaviour. Racism and sexism are rife and on the increase. Democracy itself is under threat. Saturn in Aquarius will push us to ask how cohesive our society is – are we falling together or falling apart?

With Saturn and Jupiter in Aquarius, doubts about the future vie with hope. There is cause to hope and there is cause to doubt. We may be socially distanced and yet new means of communication open up. It’s likely that given the increased emphasis on technology for us to do our jobs and connect with one another, new laws will follow. Jupiter is connected to law specifically and Saturn brings rules. So, expect tighter rules around the internet, what can and can’t be said, the role and rights of social media. And talking of laws, depending on the ruling, a landmark case in the UK could also see councils here forced to make the air cleaner after a young child died, quite probably from air pollution. Saturn in Aquarius may push us to purify the air planet-wide as the climate crisis continues.

Whilst some rules may be there for our protection, others may curb our freedoms. Aquarius is a sign associated with liberty, uniqueness and difference. It embraces all that is weird and wonderful and unique. Maybe those who have been on the fringes may find more acceptance during these coming years. Outsiders can become mainstream. Jupiter in Aquarius may hopefully give us a more progressive education with a better understanding of science. However, the shadow side of Saturn in Aquarius could seek to silence all fringe thought – a possibly dangerous move. There needs to be room for discourse. Astrology too comes under the realm of Aquarius so I feel it’s important that we don’t end up in a situation where the rise of science and reason that could be expected and welcomed from these transits don’t drown out the voice of spirituality and the arts. Hopefully any imbalance may be corrected when Jupiter enters Pisces.

As Jupiter and Saturn make their way through Aquarius, they will both square Uranus. Jupiter will make only one square on January 17, 2021 whereas Saturn will create three squares in February, June and December of 2021.

Jupiter square Uranus increases the possibility of rebellion, unrest, destabilisation. Jupiter magnifies what it touches and Uranus is the revolutionary. This aspect could also manifest as increased excitement but the energy is wired and fraught with tension. It doesn’t escape my attention that this occurs just a few days before the US inauguration. The aspect is further inflamed by a volatile conjunction between Mars and Uranus making this a particularly unstable period.

Saturn and Uranus represent the clash of old and new, conventional versus unconventional, rules versus freedom, stability versus instability, conformity versus non-conformity. With Uranus moving through Taurus, there are big shake-ups happening around money and security. The pandemic has pushed many people to the brink. Businesses have gone bust. Hospitality, entertainment, sporting and travel industries are on their knees.

Recently, I noticed in the news in the UK that all captive birds must now be kept inside due to an outbreak of bird flu. Birds are creatures of the air but they are effectively ‘grounded’ by this situation – a sad but perfect example of Saturn moving into Aquarius action. Perhaps too we can expect many of our planes to continue to be grounded. Whilst governments worldwide have pumped trillions of dollars into the system, there’s a sense that there is more to come. As Pluto in Capricorn and Uranus in Taurus tell us, the system must change and change it will. How this plays out is yet to be seen but Saturn and Uranus will keep the banks and stock markets on their toes. There’s also a strong feeling that we must be willing to get out of our comfort zone for the sake of our future – take charge (Saturn) and innovate (Uranus). But some may feel uncomfortable as the old and familiar lifestyles fall away. Some may rebel (Uranus) to keep things the same (Saturn). It makes me think of the phrase from the Borg ‘Resistance is Futile!’.

Old structures must change but we can take the best of the past. We don’t have to throw out everything we have built or learned.  It’s vital that we stay flexible as the more we resist, the more stress and anxiety manifests. 2020 was the year that knocked us down. It was the karmic reset we needed to take stock, reassess, and find out what is truly important in our lives. 2021 will bring us an opportunity to lay the foundations of a new future and awaken us to a new reality.

The Astrology Chart of the First Covid-19 Vaccination

A 91 year-old lady was the first person in the UK to receive the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine today. The time was 6:31 a.m. in Coventry. UK – Source BBC News.

Here are some brief observations about the chart – and it’s a fascinating one.

Firstly, Hygeia, Goddess of Health and Hygiene is just about to station retrograde at 16:08 UT on the same day and so is therefore already stationary. A stationary planet has added ‘weight’ in a chart and calls attention to itself. Hygeia is in the 9th house of the chart which speaks of the health of the world at large and it is in a helpful trine to Mercury (news) and the Sun putting Hygeia in the spotlight. Together with Mars in the 5th house of the chart, the Sun, and Hygeia form a Grand Trine, a promising pattern. Mars in the 5th house is the co-ruler of this chart as Scorpio is Rising and makes me think that this ‘action’ is about helping us to be able to get back to enjoying life – the 5th house is the house of pastimes, hobbies, the entertainment industry and fun.

Pluto, the modern ruler of this chart is in the 2nd house, still conjunct Jupiter. Not only does this speak of the huge financial investment that this has taken but also that this is simply about survival. The 2nd house is about life, Pluto (and the 8th house) about death. We don’t want to die, we want to live! Jupiter gives us hope and this duo also stands for microscopes and telescopes, the ability to see into that which has not been seen before. Scorpio rising and ruler Pluto talk of taking control of a situation. Mars and Pluto however are square one another so we aren’t going to get back to enjoying life quickly, no matter how hard we push. It’s going to take time which may be frustrating. No pushing and shoving please, form an orderly queue – that’s the phrase that comes to mind with this aspect!

I note the Moon riding high on the MC and the opposition to Neptune. This rather eloquently speaks of the retired (Neptune) elderly lady who has gone from invisible (Neptune) to visible (MC!). Pluto is trine to the Moon and the MC, which speaks of fortification, protection, power. The Moon, MC and Vesta (focus) are all in the health orientated sign of Virgo.

Note that the Moon is also square the Nodes and in the degree of the Nodes. This is the Moon wobble, the crisis point in eclipse season, karmic, powerful, intensely creative. Neptune’s opposition to the Moon, aside from describing the lady in question as first recipient, can also represent all the unknown factors, such as how long will the vaccine last, will it do as we hope it will do? The Sun is waxing towards a square with Neptune tomorrow so I think that we should anticipate some uncertainty to come. Still, the Sun is fortified by Mars and Hygeia and I don’t want to take away from that. I think it suggests that it’s important that we don’t get carried away that this is the answer to all our prayers. The chart certainly strongly suggests the vaccine will help, but nothing is perfect. Saturn’s anaretic position reminds us that it is vitally important that we are realistic.

With Saturn on the anaretic degree of Capricorn we have the feeling of urgency, the weight of responsibility the huge mountain to climb, the questions about ‘longevity’ of the vaccine. The ‘mountain’ was actually mentioned in the article linked above this morning but it has since been re-written! Note that today has been dubbed ‘V-Day’ – yet another reference to the war symbolism which has been strong throughout this year. I spoke of this in depth initially in my forecast for January 2020 where I did a long piece on the Saturn-Pluto conjunction. Rather than a world war fighting each other, the war has been on Coronavirus. V-day traditionally stands for ‘Victory Day’. Oh and one other point, the second person to receive the vaccine is called William Shakespeare! Symbolically, this tells us then that the story of Covid will stand the test of time and be told far into our future. The line ‘All’s Well the End’s Well’ is appearing now in the headlines – sweet <3

Just to throw in some other asteroids for thought – Sedna is sitting on the Descendant in the 6th house of this chart, describing the sacrifices we have had to make for the sake of our collective health and we will still need to continue to do so for a while to come. Uranus also in the house can represent the instability we have experienced as a result of the health crisis.  Yet Uranus here also points to an important awakening, not to mention scientific advancements that have come in the wake of Covid.

Medical asteroids Asclepius and Chariklo are conjunct Jupiter. Asclepius is connected to healing, medicine and physicians. Chariklo was the wife of Chiron – she who holds space, the healer of the healer – perfect considering that many of the front life staff in the health services will receive the vaccine first.

Osiris, he who was torn apart, is conjunct Saturn – it makes me think of the ‘Build Back Better’ refrain that we keep hearing in different quarters. Iris, Goddess of the rainbow is also here. There is hope, we can rebuild him – wasn’t that something from the Six Million Dollar Man? Yes, rebuilding is going to be costly, very costly.

Themis is conjunct the Sun, which speaks of divine order, justice, putting things in place, fairness and natural law. Minerva is conjunct the Moon emphasising the wisdom of the divine feminine. She is the Roman version of Pallas Athena who has just stepped into Aquarius. Pallas is also associated with wise counsel, wisdom and strategy and her genius is brilliant in inventive Aquarius. Pallas also brings peace through her invention of the olive tree. Perhaps too this new invention will also restore peace back to our world. It will take time and the road is long and hard but still, I consider this to be a very supportive chart of today’s momentous event.

The 29th Degree: Tales from the Threshold

NOTE – This article first appeared in Dell Horoscope magazine in the July/August 2019 edition. Many thanks to Editor-in-Chief Ronnie Grishman for offering the opportunity, publishing this article and for giving me a thrill of making it to the front cover in the year I had my progressed Full Moon in Sagittarius! Sadly, Dell horoscope magazine has now stopped publishing and is much missed.

Historically, the final or anaretic degree of a sign from 29°00’00” to 29°59’59” has been associated with some dark and difficult interpretations. The word anaretic itself is rooted in killer or destroyer. It can be assumed that these negative associations stem from Egyptian Terms where the last degrees of all the signs are either ruled by malefics Mars or Saturn. Anaretic degrees are also part of a group known as critical degrees and I first came across talk of these when I was learning Horary Astrology. In his seminal work on the topic, Anthony Louis says:

“A planet in a critical degree is like a person wandering through a demilitarized zone between North and South Korea…It’s a risky place to be.” P.287

The 29th degree then is like the ultimate no man’s land. Consequently, much is written about how difficult these degrees are, how sensitive, how volatile.

In fairy tales and folklore however, ‘in-between places’ hold great mystery. Dawn, dusk, midnight, the shore where sea meets land, crossroads – all mark a moment of change from one state to another. The 29th degree too is liminal, standing at the threshold of the next sign. In my own studies, I have found that there’s a sense of magic about these degrees although this does not negate the potential difficulties.

At critical moments of change, there’s a crescendo, a swell of energy bloating and distorting. Just as studies show the brain often fires a surge of activity right before death, so too does the 29th degree seem to become bigger, brighter, bolder, louder as it nears the end of its journey. Perhaps one of the paradoxes about the threshold degrees is despite them being in a state of change and the concept of blurred lines, this is the moment that they also express the pure attributes of their sign to the extreme. One of the most common problems is that when these degrees are activated by a hard aspect, they can overcompensate and over-react. Just as a stressed person about to move to a new house might feel at the end of their tether, so can the 29th degree planet feel like it’s at breaking point.

One of the most common discussions we see about the 29th degree is the association with karma or fate. In horary astrology, a planet at 29 degrees is often void of course meaning that there will be no further major aspects before the planet leaves its sign. All the action has already happened. There’s nothing further that can be done. Fate/karma is in motion and consequences cannot be avoided. A horary chart with 29 degrees on the Ascendant is invalid. The question is already answered or a moot point. It’s gone, done, stop asking, give it to the Gods. All we can do is wait for the next chapter to unfold.

Another attribute of the void of course planet is that as there are no further aspects to make, it can feel like moving into the void. It’s been described as a lonely degree. Elvis Presley had Venus at 29CAP21 and often expressed loneliness both personally and through his songs such as ‘Are You Lonesome Tonight?’. Certainly, it seems as though those who have this degree in the natal chart can be ahead of the crowd. Natives can stand out or be outstanding, receiving the consequential infamy or fame. Oscar Pistorius is a prime example of both – famous for being a blade runner of outstanding ability and then acquiring infamy when he murdered his girlfriend. His Sun is at 29SCO44. Child killer Myra Hindley had her Sun at 29CAN32 and Venus at 29GEM43. The press constantly referred to her as ‘the most evil woman in Britain’. Germaine Greer, a leader in the second wave of feminism has an anaretic Mars, the universally accepted symbol to represent ‘man’! Oprah Winfrey, one of the greatest philanthropists in American history has her Ascendant at 29SAG40.

From an evolutionary astrology point of view, a person with natal planets or angles at 29 degrees of a sign is in a process of concluding a certain spiritual lesson. In life, it can manifest as a feeling of urgency, like something must be done. It’s all or nothing, critical (!), now or never. We need catharsis and we need it now. When that planet or point is activated by transit or progression, these powerful energies flood out and it can feel like things happen that are out of our control that push us towards a certain path. 29 degrees often has a sense of a mission to accomplish. We could also say that perhaps the soul has had many lifetimes of experiences with this particular energy in their chart. At its best, the 29th degree can be a wise teacher who has mastered all forms of expression in that sign placement. The 29th degree can be a degree of great maturity, a sage, a guru. Generally, the planet with the highest degree in the chart represents the part of the psyche that has developed the most.

So, the 29th degree of a sign can give us the following attributes and associations: –

Heightened expression
Loneliness and vulnerability
Wisdom and mastery
A spark of magic
Harbinger of change
A catalyst
A crisis
A leader in the field

The Anaretic Degree in Practice

Let’s look at some examples. Before I continue, it’s worth reiterating that all charts require a full delineation to achieve the most depth and nuance of personality and potential. However, what I hope to provide here are some illustrations of how these degrees can work in practice to give food for thought in chart interpretation. Note that I use Equal house throughout and birth place for return charts.

Natal Chart Examples:

David Attenborough – Natal Chiron 29ARI02, 3rd House

Chiron – The Wounded Healer, Teacher, Mentor, Centaur (half human, half animal)

Aries – A leader, enthusiasm, animation

3rd House – Communication, education, mind and learning

Sabian Symbol – A Duck pond and its Brood

David Attenborough has been described as ‘a National Treasure’ and is one of the UK’s best loved TV personalities. He is perhaps one of the most striking examples of an anaretic degree as ‘wisdom and mastery’.

David Attenborough is widely known for his documentary series ‘Life on Earth’. For forty years, Attenborough has brought the wonders of the natural world into our homes, teaching us about the creatures that roam the planet. In the first series, Attenborough found himself amidst a family of wild great apes and the ad lib scene that followed has been voted as one of the 100 greatest moments in television history. The scene was aired on April 3, 1979, just as Attenborough completed the third in a series of three squares between Jupiter and Chiron. Jupiter is associated with meaning, understanding and all things that are big! In a quiet, reverent voice, Attenborough delivered the famous line “There is more meaning and mutual understanding in exchanging a glance with a gorilla than with any other animal I know…”

George Elliot – Natal Sun 29SCO06, 1st house

The Sun – name, identity, purpose

Scorpio – secrecy, psychology and crime

1st house – appearance, how we present ourselves to others and how others see us

Sabian Symbol – The Hallowe’en Jester

A famous novelist, ‘George Eliot’ was really Mary Anne Evans. She wrote under a male pseudonym to encourage readers to take her work more seriously. She wasn’t considered beautiful enough to attract a marriage, so her father invested in her education. When her first novel received positive attention, an imposter tried to claim it for themselves, forcing her to reveal her identity. Her greatest novel ‘Middlemarch’ is notable for its deep psychological insight.

Edward VIII – Black Moon Lilith (True position) 29CAP13, 12th House conjunct Ascendant
Black Moon Lilith – Forbidden fruit, ‘the other woman’, equality, exile

Capricorn – Convention, authority, rigidity, restriction

12th House – Hidden enemies, the unconscious, behind the scenes, retreat

Sabian symbol – A Secret Business Conference

Edward VIII had already raised eyebrows by having an affair with Wallis Simpson, an American divorcee. When Edward became King, despite royal protocol, he proposed to Wallis. This caused a constitutional crisis as a divorced woman was considered ‘morally unacceptable’. The King was expected to honour historical rules and the higher authority of the Church. Edward proposed that Wallis be given a different title than ‘Queen’ to resolve the problem, but this idea was rejected. Consequently, Edward, who only had eyes for Wallis, abdicated December 10, 19361. After giving up his royal title, he addressed the country via the radio saying, “I have found it impossible to carry the heavy burden of responsibility and to discharge my duties as king as I would wish to do without the help and support of the woman I love.”. In the following year, just after Pluto opposed BML, Edward and Wallis visited Hitler. It’s widely believed that Edward sympathised with Fascism and possibly even leaked allied plans.

Donald Trump – ASC 29LEO58

Ascendant – How we interact with the world

Leo – Pride, Theatre, Arrogance

Sabian Symbol – An Unsealed Letter

With Donald Trump’s Ascendant anaretic, this is a critical lifetime where he is pushed to complete a mission, perhaps one that involves being more confident and self-affirming given that his ruling Gemini Sun is conjunct the North Node in the 10th house. It is natural, with this chart, to be in the public eye however unfortunately Trump has fallen into the trap of anaretic overcompensation.

At its most negative depiction, 29 Leo wants to shine at all costs and is puffed up with pride. The Sabian symbol working negatively can depict a ‘blabbermouth’!

“Sorry losers and haters, but my IQ is one of the highest – and you all know it! Please don’t feel so stupid or insecure, it’s not your fault.” Twitter, 9/5/13

Not all of us have a natal anaretic planet or point but all of us will experience times in our lives when planets will become anaretic by progression, solar arc or solar/lunar return. I find these critical degrees to be integral to predictive work. The progressed Moon changes signs every two and a half years, each time staying for one month on the final degree of its sign. These can denote times of emotional difficulty, crisis or heightened needs. An anaretic Sun in the progressed chart will stay on that degree for an entire year and often manifests as a critical turning point in the life of the native. There’s a similar feeling when progressed angles become anaretic with either the physical appearance or outlook undergoing changes (the Ascendant) or the career or status at a turning point (MC). When planets progress to an anaretic degree, often they bring to the foreground the natural attributes of that planet. For example, Jupiter rules the hips and in the year my progressed Jupiter became anaretic, my hip osteoarthritis became significantly worse. The problem has become chronic, but I imagine will improve when my progressed Jupiter moves into Virgo in 2024.  Due to the slow movement of the progressed chart, sometimes a planet progresses to an anaretic degree never to move to the next degree in this lifetime. This brings with it a sense that there’s an ongoing mission and it remains a constant background hum.

Progressed and Solar Arc Examples

Queen Elizabeth II

Between April 1992 and April 1993, the Queen’s progressed Midheaven was anaretic in Capricorn. As mentioned earlier, Capricorn is connected to the constitution, tradition, authority as well as structure and establishment. In a speech given on 24 November that year, the Queen called 1992 her annus horribilis (horrible year) due to the many difficult events that had occurred. The public image (the Midheaven) of the Royal family had taken a difficult turn as divorce (Prince Andrew and Princess Anne) and scandal (Princess Diana’s true story published) hit the headlines. The year culminated in a major fire at Windsor castle, one of the Queen’s main residences, which caused major destruction. It was highly symbolic perhaps of the tumultuous affairs of the family.

Currently, the Queen’s Progressed Ascendant is anaretic in Gemini but, in conjunction with progressed Venus, the changes indicated during this anaretic year have been much happier, centring around family weddings and (multiple!) births of grandchildren.

The Queen’s Sun too is also anaretic and has been since October 29, 2018. During the first part of this journey, the transiting North Node has been conjunct the progressed Sun which is a protective influence. Between March 22 and April 17, 2019, both the Queen’s progressed lights will be anaretic. Along with Pluto conjunct her Ascendant this year, these are strong indicators of powerful upcoming changes in the Queen’s life.

Donald Trump

On June 15, 2015, transiting Saturn completed its second square to Trump’s Ascendant. The following day, Trump announced his run for presidency. By July 24, 2015, his progressed Sun was anaretic, conjoining his natal Ascendant degree on July 25, 2016. As Trump’s progressed Sun emerged from the hidden 12th house and entered Virgo on August 6, 2016, this heralded his coming into the spotlight after playing for many years behind the scenes and a change of identity as he was then elected president in November 2016. Note that on election day, Mars was anaretic therefore activating his Ascendant and all natal house cusps.

Margaret Thatcher

At around 9.30 a.m. on November 22, 1990, Downing Street announced Margaret Thatcher’s resignation. The anaretic transiting Sun in her first house was on the midpoint of her solar arc Mercury and Neptune, both anaretic. Mercury was the ruler of her Midheaven. Neptune can symbolise giving up, defeat, sacrifice, photography, tears. She was famously photographed crying as she left Number 10.

Solar Returns Examples

Solar return charts that feature an anaretic planet tend to revolve around the issues connected to that planet’s symbolism during that solar year. In my own life for example, the year that my SR Sun (identity) conjoined anaretic Mars (fire, independence) in the 10th house (career) was the year that the building I worked in burned to the ground, propelling me towards self-employment.

Queen Elizabeth II

An anaretic Ascendant in the Solar return can generally bring the idea of a ‘big year’ as life is about to change. The Queen’s Solar Return on April 20, 1997 was particularly ominous with the Ascendant on 29TAU19, the degree associated with ‘the weeping sisters’. Ceres (the Mother) and Neptune (loss, fairy tales) were both anaretic with the former tightly square to the Ascendant and the latter conjunct the MC. This was the year that Diana, the mother of the Queen’s grandsons and the ‘fairy-tale Princess’ was killed in a car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997.

Frida Kahlo

Solar Return July 5, 1953 Ascendant 29VIR51. Virgo is associated with health so we could deduce a possible health crisis, especially as chart ruler Mercury was conjunct the South Node. The MC is also anaretic in Gemini. Gemini rules those things that come in pairs. In August that year. Frida’s right leg was amputated below the knee.

Elvis Presley

Solar Return January 8, 1956. Capricorn Rising. Ruler Saturn (things that stand the test of time) is anaretic at 29SCO36. This was the year, Elvis recorded Heartbreak Hotel (remember natal anaretic Venus!) and catapulted him into the history books. In the beginning though, not everyone enjoyed Elvis’s style with the British notably placing the single on the ‘restricted’ playlist.

Anaretic Degrees in Mundane Astrology

Currently as I write, the UK government are in disarray after prime minister Theresa May lost a vote on her proposed Brexit deal. It’s the biggest government defeat in history. Out of interest, Teresa May herself has three anaretic planets, Saturn and Pluto which square one another and also Neptune. On first coming to power, she was called ‘the new iron lady’ by the press. It seems that Neptune holds that ‘little spark of magic’ as despite the opposition, she has survived several no confidence votes whilst Neptune by transit has been conjunct her natal Mars. A little ‘divine intervention’ perhaps!

Brexit itself is scheduled for 29 March 2019 at 11 pm UK time. The chart for this time has ruler Mars at 29TAU08 conjunct the Descendant. No wonder there’s so much heated contention over the whole business, and no one can agree! In the UK’s chart, progressed Uranus (liberation) is also currently anaretic and has been since the coalition government came to power in 2010. It perhaps explains why there’s such a political drive to ‘break free’.

In the US chart, Pluto is anaretic in Capricorn and has been since December 2002. Issues of power, control, guns, war, terrorism, oil, wealth have been heightened since that time. Pluto will remain anaretic until 2049. However, with the US about to go through a Pluto return in 2022, we can anticipate that all things connected to the Lord of the Underworld will be front and centre. Critical structural changes are coming.

  1. Edward signed the abdication papers on December 10, 1936. His final act as King was December 11, 1936 – the Royal Assent of his own abdication.

Lunar Eclipse in Gemini – November 2020

The Lunar eclipse takes place at 09:29 (UT) on November 30, 2020 at 08°Ge38′.

The Moon is the only body in the skies that is in an air sign. It seems like our focus and choices are being narrowed. There are important decisions to make around this time, choices that will play a part in our unfolding future. Full Moons are a time of culmination, conclusion, closure, completion but it’s out of the ordinary as the Moon is connected to the Nodes, the Gates of Karma. Eclipse season puts us in touch with our soul’s journey and events that occur around this time serve to realign us to our path.

Themes that arise with Gemini and the global 3rd house are centred around mind and communication, schools and learning, local transport systems, newspapers, aunts, uncles and siblings. It’s possible that these themes may be uppermost either personally or collectively.

As the Moon is in Gemini and the Sun in Sagittarius, we are also called to explore what we know (Gemini) versus what we believe (Sagittarius). It’s important that we listen, hear all sides of the story and focus on details. Themes of duality are also in play. Gemini is a sign that likes to categorise things as this or that, black or white – stick a label on it, give it a name. But not everything in life is so clear cut. The Moon is sesquiquadrate Pluto suggesting that we are on a slippery slope to thinking in extremes. We need to make room for grey areas and alternate ideas.

Catastrophic thinking is a no-no. Mercury, the ruler of this lunation is in intense Scorpio but forms helpful sextiles to Saturn and Pallas. It tells us that we need to keep our head, control our thoughts (rather than trying to control what is outside of us), lean into old wisdom and past experience for answers. Thoughts and feelings are uniquely bound so we may have a lesson in how shifting our thoughts can change our feelings and vice versa. It seems like this is a time of powerful realisations.

Eclipses have a way of revealing that which was unseen before. News or information that comes to light around this time serves to help us make important choices or decisions. A conversation could open a whole new area of growth. It’s also possible that a new route is revealed or an old option that we once discarded presents itself again. ‘Take a second look’, says the cosmos. What was unseen before is now in view. A sextile from the eclipsed Moon to Chiron suggests that there is an opportunity to heal an old wound that may irrevocably change the way we think. When we change our thoughts, we change our future.

If you would like to hear more about this eclipse, I recorded a 35 minute astro-tarot reading over on my Patreon on the $1 tier. In that recording, I talk about asteroids Spirit and DNA and how they connect to this eclipse, along with the Sabian symbol. I also briefly discuss the significance of this eclipse in the US chart.
