The 29th Degree: Tales from the Threshold

NOTE – This article first appeared in Dell Horoscope magazine in the July/August 2019 edition. Many thanks to Editor-in-Chief Ronnie Grishman for offering the opportunity, publishing this article and for giving me a thrill of making it to the front cover in the year I had my progressed Full Moon in Sagittarius! Sadly, Dell horoscope magazine has now stopped publishing and is much missed.

Historically, the final or anaretic degree of a sign from 29°00’00” to 29°59’59” has been associated with some dark and difficult interpretations. The word anaretic itself is rooted in killer or destroyer. It can be assumed that these negative associations stem from Egyptian Terms where the last degrees of all the signs are either ruled by malefics Mars or Saturn. Anaretic degrees are also part of a group known as critical degrees and I first came across talk of these when I was learning Horary Astrology. In his seminal work on the topic, Anthony Louis says:

“A planet in a critical degree is like a person wandering through a demilitarized zone between North and South Korea…It’s a risky place to be.” P.287

The 29th degree then is like the ultimate no man’s land. Consequently, much is written about how difficult these degrees are, how sensitive, how volatile.

In fairy tales and folklore however, ‘in-between places’ hold great mystery. Dawn, dusk, midnight, the shore where sea meets land, crossroads – all mark a moment of change from one state to another. The 29th degree too is liminal, standing at the threshold of the next sign. In my own studies, I have found that there’s a sense of magic about these degrees although this does not negate the potential difficulties.

At critical moments of change, there’s a crescendo, a swell of energy bloating and distorting. Just as studies show the brain often fires a surge of activity right before death, so too does the 29th degree seem to become bigger, brighter, bolder, louder as it nears the end of its journey. Perhaps one of the paradoxes about the threshold degrees is despite them being in a state of change and the concept of blurred lines, this is the moment that they also express the pure attributes of their sign to the extreme. One of the most common problems is that when these degrees are activated by a hard aspect, they can overcompensate and over-react. Just as a stressed person about to move to a new house might feel at the end of their tether, so can the 29th degree planet feel like it’s at breaking point.

One of the most common discussions we see about the 29th degree is the association with karma or fate. In horary astrology, a planet at 29 degrees is often void of course meaning that there will be no further major aspects before the planet leaves its sign. All the action has already happened. There’s nothing further that can be done. Fate/karma is in motion and consequences cannot be avoided. A horary chart with 29 degrees on the Ascendant is invalid. The question is already answered or a moot point. It’s gone, done, stop asking, give it to the Gods. All we can do is wait for the next chapter to unfold.

Another attribute of the void of course planet is that as there are no further aspects to make, it can feel like moving into the void. It’s been described as a lonely degree. Elvis Presley had Venus at 29CAP21 and often expressed loneliness both personally and through his songs such as ‘Are You Lonesome Tonight?’. Certainly, it seems as though those who have this degree in the natal chart can be ahead of the crowd. Natives can stand out or be outstanding, receiving the consequential infamy or fame. Oscar Pistorius is a prime example of both – famous for being a blade runner of outstanding ability and then acquiring infamy when he murdered his girlfriend. His Sun is at 29SCO44. Child killer Myra Hindley had her Sun at 29CAN32 and Venus at 29GEM43. The press constantly referred to her as ‘the most evil woman in Britain’. Germaine Greer, a leader in the second wave of feminism has an anaretic Mars, the universally accepted symbol to represent ‘man’! Oprah Winfrey, one of the greatest philanthropists in American history has her Ascendant at 29SAG40.

From an evolutionary astrology point of view, a person with natal planets or angles at 29 degrees of a sign is in a process of concluding a certain spiritual lesson. In life, it can manifest as a feeling of urgency, like something must be done. It’s all or nothing, critical (!), now or never. We need catharsis and we need it now. When that planet or point is activated by transit or progression, these powerful energies flood out and it can feel like things happen that are out of our control that push us towards a certain path. 29 degrees often has a sense of a mission to accomplish. We could also say that perhaps the soul has had many lifetimes of experiences with this particular energy in their chart. At its best, the 29th degree can be a wise teacher who has mastered all forms of expression in that sign placement. The 29th degree can be a degree of great maturity, a sage, a guru. Generally, the planet with the highest degree in the chart represents the part of the psyche that has developed the most.

So, the 29th degree of a sign can give us the following attributes and associations: –

Heightened expression
Loneliness and vulnerability
Wisdom and mastery
A spark of magic
Harbinger of change
A catalyst
A crisis
A leader in the field

The Anaretic Degree in Practice

Let’s look at some examples. Before I continue, it’s worth reiterating that all charts require a full delineation to achieve the most depth and nuance of personality and potential. However, what I hope to provide here are some illustrations of how these degrees can work in practice to give food for thought in chart interpretation. Note that I use Equal house throughout and birth place for return charts.

Natal Chart Examples:

David Attenborough – Natal Chiron 29ARI02, 3rd House

Chiron – The Wounded Healer, Teacher, Mentor, Centaur (half human, half animal)

Aries – A leader, enthusiasm, animation

3rd House – Communication, education, mind and learning

Sabian Symbol – A Duck pond and its Brood

David Attenborough has been described as ‘a National Treasure’ and is one of the UK’s best loved TV personalities. He is perhaps one of the most striking examples of an anaretic degree as ‘wisdom and mastery’.

David Attenborough is widely known for his documentary series ‘Life on Earth’. For forty years, Attenborough has brought the wonders of the natural world into our homes, teaching us about the creatures that roam the planet. In the first series, Attenborough found himself amidst a family of wild great apes and the ad lib scene that followed has been voted as one of the 100 greatest moments in television history. The scene was aired on April 3, 1979, just as Attenborough completed the third in a series of three squares between Jupiter and Chiron. Jupiter is associated with meaning, understanding and all things that are big! In a quiet, reverent voice, Attenborough delivered the famous line “There is more meaning and mutual understanding in exchanging a glance with a gorilla than with any other animal I know…”

George Elliot – Natal Sun 29SCO06, 1st house

The Sun – name, identity, purpose

Scorpio – secrecy, psychology and crime

1st house – appearance, how we present ourselves to others and how others see us

Sabian Symbol – The Hallowe’en Jester

A famous novelist, ‘George Eliot’ was really Mary Anne Evans. She wrote under a male pseudonym to encourage readers to take her work more seriously. She wasn’t considered beautiful enough to attract a marriage, so her father invested in her education. When her first novel received positive attention, an imposter tried to claim it for themselves, forcing her to reveal her identity. Her greatest novel ‘Middlemarch’ is notable for its deep psychological insight.

Edward VIII – Black Moon Lilith (True position) 29CAP13, 12th House conjunct Ascendant
Black Moon Lilith – Forbidden fruit, ‘the other woman’, equality, exile

Capricorn – Convention, authority, rigidity, restriction

12th House – Hidden enemies, the unconscious, behind the scenes, retreat

Sabian symbol – A Secret Business Conference

Edward VIII had already raised eyebrows by having an affair with Wallis Simpson, an American divorcee. When Edward became King, despite royal protocol, he proposed to Wallis. This caused a constitutional crisis as a divorced woman was considered ‘morally unacceptable’. The King was expected to honour historical rules and the higher authority of the Church. Edward proposed that Wallis be given a different title than ‘Queen’ to resolve the problem, but this idea was rejected. Consequently, Edward, who only had eyes for Wallis, abdicated December 10, 19361. After giving up his royal title, he addressed the country via the radio saying, “I have found it impossible to carry the heavy burden of responsibility and to discharge my duties as king as I would wish to do without the help and support of the woman I love.”. In the following year, just after Pluto opposed BML, Edward and Wallis visited Hitler. It’s widely believed that Edward sympathised with Fascism and possibly even leaked allied plans.

Donald Trump – ASC 29LEO58

Ascendant – How we interact with the world

Leo – Pride, Theatre, Arrogance

Sabian Symbol – An Unsealed Letter

With Donald Trump’s Ascendant anaretic, this is a critical lifetime where he is pushed to complete a mission, perhaps one that involves being more confident and self-affirming given that his ruling Gemini Sun is conjunct the North Node in the 10th house. It is natural, with this chart, to be in the public eye however unfortunately Trump has fallen into the trap of anaretic overcompensation.

At its most negative depiction, 29 Leo wants to shine at all costs and is puffed up with pride. The Sabian symbol working negatively can depict a ‘blabbermouth’!

“Sorry losers and haters, but my IQ is one of the highest – and you all know it! Please don’t feel so stupid or insecure, it’s not your fault.” Twitter, 9/5/13

Not all of us have a natal anaretic planet or point but all of us will experience times in our lives when planets will become anaretic by progression, solar arc or solar/lunar return. I find these critical degrees to be integral to predictive work. The progressed Moon changes signs every two and a half years, each time staying for one month on the final degree of its sign. These can denote times of emotional difficulty, crisis or heightened needs. An anaretic Sun in the progressed chart will stay on that degree for an entire year and often manifests as a critical turning point in the life of the native. There’s a similar feeling when progressed angles become anaretic with either the physical appearance or outlook undergoing changes (the Ascendant) or the career or status at a turning point (MC). When planets progress to an anaretic degree, often they bring to the foreground the natural attributes of that planet. For example, Jupiter rules the hips and in the year my progressed Jupiter became anaretic, my hip osteoarthritis became significantly worse. The problem has become chronic, but I imagine will improve when my progressed Jupiter moves into Virgo in 2024.  Due to the slow movement of the progressed chart, sometimes a planet progresses to an anaretic degree never to move to the next degree in this lifetime. This brings with it a sense that there’s an ongoing mission and it remains a constant background hum.

Progressed and Solar Arc Examples

Queen Elizabeth II

Between April 1992 and April 1993, the Queen’s progressed Midheaven was anaretic in Capricorn. As mentioned earlier, Capricorn is connected to the constitution, tradition, authority as well as structure and establishment. In a speech given on 24 November that year, the Queen called 1992 her annus horribilis (horrible year) due to the many difficult events that had occurred. The public image (the Midheaven) of the Royal family had taken a difficult turn as divorce (Prince Andrew and Princess Anne) and scandal (Princess Diana’s true story published) hit the headlines. The year culminated in a major fire at Windsor castle, one of the Queen’s main residences, which caused major destruction. It was highly symbolic perhaps of the tumultuous affairs of the family.

Currently, the Queen’s Progressed Ascendant is anaretic in Gemini but, in conjunction with progressed Venus, the changes indicated during this anaretic year have been much happier, centring around family weddings and (multiple!) births of grandchildren.

The Queen’s Sun too is also anaretic and has been since October 29, 2018. During the first part of this journey, the transiting North Node has been conjunct the progressed Sun which is a protective influence. Between March 22 and April 17, 2019, both the Queen’s progressed lights will be anaretic. Along with Pluto conjunct her Ascendant this year, these are strong indicators of powerful upcoming changes in the Queen’s life.

Donald Trump

On June 15, 2015, transiting Saturn completed its second square to Trump’s Ascendant. The following day, Trump announced his run for presidency. By July 24, 2015, his progressed Sun was anaretic, conjoining his natal Ascendant degree on July 25, 2016. As Trump’s progressed Sun emerged from the hidden 12th house and entered Virgo on August 6, 2016, this heralded his coming into the spotlight after playing for many years behind the scenes and a change of identity as he was then elected president in November 2016. Note that on election day, Mars was anaretic therefore activating his Ascendant and all natal house cusps.

Margaret Thatcher

At around 9.30 a.m. on November 22, 1990, Downing Street announced Margaret Thatcher’s resignation. The anaretic transiting Sun in her first house was on the midpoint of her solar arc Mercury and Neptune, both anaretic. Mercury was the ruler of her Midheaven. Neptune can symbolise giving up, defeat, sacrifice, photography, tears. She was famously photographed crying as she left Number 10.

Solar Returns Examples

Solar return charts that feature an anaretic planet tend to revolve around the issues connected to that planet’s symbolism during that solar year. In my own life for example, the year that my SR Sun (identity) conjoined anaretic Mars (fire, independence) in the 10th house (career) was the year that the building I worked in burned to the ground, propelling me towards self-employment.

Queen Elizabeth II

An anaretic Ascendant in the Solar return can generally bring the idea of a ‘big year’ as life is about to change. The Queen’s Solar Return on April 20, 1997 was particularly ominous with the Ascendant on 29TAU19, the degree associated with ‘the weeping sisters’. Ceres (the Mother) and Neptune (loss, fairy tales) were both anaretic with the former tightly square to the Ascendant and the latter conjunct the MC. This was the year that Diana, the mother of the Queen’s grandsons and the ‘fairy-tale Princess’ was killed in a car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997.

Frida Kahlo

Solar Return July 5, 1953 Ascendant 29VIR51. Virgo is associated with health so we could deduce a possible health crisis, especially as chart ruler Mercury was conjunct the South Node. The MC is also anaretic in Gemini. Gemini rules those things that come in pairs. In August that year. Frida’s right leg was amputated below the knee.

Elvis Presley

Solar Return January 8, 1956. Capricorn Rising. Ruler Saturn (things that stand the test of time) is anaretic at 29SCO36. This was the year, Elvis recorded Heartbreak Hotel (remember natal anaretic Venus!) and catapulted him into the history books. In the beginning though, not everyone enjoyed Elvis’s style with the British notably placing the single on the ‘restricted’ playlist.

Anaretic Degrees in Mundane Astrology

Currently as I write, the UK government are in disarray after prime minister Theresa May lost a vote on her proposed Brexit deal. It’s the biggest government defeat in history. Out of interest, Teresa May herself has three anaretic planets, Saturn and Pluto which square one another and also Neptune. On first coming to power, she was called ‘the new iron lady’ by the press. It seems that Neptune holds that ‘little spark of magic’ as despite the opposition, she has survived several no confidence votes whilst Neptune by transit has been conjunct her natal Mars. A little ‘divine intervention’ perhaps!

Brexit itself is scheduled for 29 March 2019 at 11 pm UK time. The chart for this time has ruler Mars at 29TAU08 conjunct the Descendant. No wonder there’s so much heated contention over the whole business, and no one can agree! In the UK’s chart, progressed Uranus (liberation) is also currently anaretic and has been since the coalition government came to power in 2010. It perhaps explains why there’s such a political drive to ‘break free’.

In the US chart, Pluto is anaretic in Capricorn and has been since December 2002. Issues of power, control, guns, war, terrorism, oil, wealth have been heightened since that time. Pluto will remain anaretic until 2049. However, with the US about to go through a Pluto return in 2022, we can anticipate that all things connected to the Lord of the Underworld will be front and centre. Critical structural changes are coming.

  1. Edward signed the abdication papers on December 10, 1936. His final act as King was December 11, 1936 – the Royal Assent of his own abdication.

Lunar Eclipse in Gemini – November 2020

The Lunar eclipse takes place at 09:29 (UT) on November 30, 2020 at 08°Ge38′.

The Moon is the only body in the skies that is in an air sign. It seems like our focus and choices are being narrowed. There are important decisions to make around this time, choices that will play a part in our unfolding future. Full Moons are a time of culmination, conclusion, closure, completion but it’s out of the ordinary as the Moon is connected to the Nodes, the Gates of Karma. Eclipse season puts us in touch with our soul’s journey and events that occur around this time serve to realign us to our path.

Themes that arise with Gemini and the global 3rd house are centred around mind and communication, schools and learning, local transport systems, newspapers, aunts, uncles and siblings. It’s possible that these themes may be uppermost either personally or collectively.

As the Moon is in Gemini and the Sun in Sagittarius, we are also called to explore what we know (Gemini) versus what we believe (Sagittarius). It’s important that we listen, hear all sides of the story and focus on details. Themes of duality are also in play. Gemini is a sign that likes to categorise things as this or that, black or white – stick a label on it, give it a name. But not everything in life is so clear cut. The Moon is sesquiquadrate Pluto suggesting that we are on a slippery slope to thinking in extremes. We need to make room for grey areas and alternate ideas.

Catastrophic thinking is a no-no. Mercury, the ruler of this lunation is in intense Scorpio but forms helpful sextiles to Saturn and Pallas. It tells us that we need to keep our head, control our thoughts (rather than trying to control what is outside of us), lean into old wisdom and past experience for answers. Thoughts and feelings are uniquely bound so we may have a lesson in how shifting our thoughts can change our feelings and vice versa. It seems like this is a time of powerful realisations.

Eclipses have a way of revealing that which was unseen before. News or information that comes to light around this time serves to help us make important choices or decisions. A conversation could open a whole new area of growth. It’s also possible that a new route is revealed or an old option that we once discarded presents itself again. ‘Take a second look’, says the cosmos. What was unseen before is now in view. A sextile from the eclipsed Moon to Chiron suggests that there is an opportunity to heal an old wound that may irrevocably change the way we think. When we change our thoughts, we change our future.

If you would like to hear more about this eclipse, I recorded a 35 minute astro-tarot reading over on my Patreon on the $1 tier. In that recording, I talk about asteroids Spirit and DNA and how they connect to this eclipse, along with the Sabian symbol. I also briefly discuss the significance of this eclipse in the US chart. December 2020 Forecast

We are here, finally, at the last month of the most tumultuous year in living memory for many of us barring those who lived through the second world war! Writing that casts my memory back to my original forecast for January 2020, where I talked about the Saturn-Pluto conjunction and how it had many signatures of war and conflict. Whilst astrologers anticipated that 2020 would be a history maker, I don’t think any of us were fully prepared for what was to come!

But now we arrive at the final month of the year and another big shift. 2020 has been long and hard, stressful, upsetting, frightening but now comes the light at the end of that long dark tunnel.

Mercury starts us off by entering Sagittarius on December 1. After spending an extra-long period in Scorpio, no doubt we’re more than ready to get our heads out of Hades and back into the light. Sagittarius is a mutable fire sign associated with the idea of expanding our horizons. Whilst Mercury can struggle with a multitude of options for exciting adventures in this sign, we are at least thinking in a more optimistic way. As the mind expands, we start to consider the future, visualise where we want to go, think big. We also tend to talk big too, speaking with greater animation which is brilliant for both story-telling and philosophical discussion. However, sometimes we need to watch the tendency to brow beat as Mercury in Sagittarius can become moralistic when working in shadow. Bluntness can also cause friction.

The Last Quarter Moon occurs on December 8. We are now in the middle of eclipse season and at the turning point between the last lunar eclipse and the next solar eclipse. With the Moon in Virgo, we feel a need to ground ourselves from the wanderlust of the Sun in Sagittarius. Details too are important now although we need to also keep an eye on the big picture. It feels as though we need to make some careful decisions and choose a direction to travel rather than haphazardly skipping from one fun idea to the next.

Mars forms a sextile to the North Node on December 12. Now that Mars is direct, we can trust that our actions are helping us towards our soul’s evolution. What we do now is all part of our unfolding karma. It’s important to note that Mercury also goes out of bounds (OOB) on this date too which means that Mercurial energy goes beyond the rules of play so to speak. Issues connected to communication and information along with news, media, students, local transport and schools are all off the chart. OOB planets have an almost Uranian quality to them, a sense that anything and everything could happen both positively and negatively. So, we need to bear in mind that this energy is a little wild right now and remains so until January 4. Watch for inspired, impassioned speeches, big ideas, wild and spurious claims.

We have a solar eclipse in Sagittarius on December 14. This is an amped up New Moon, an important new start connected to beliefs, the future, international communications and travel, higher education, law and morality. The trine to Mars suggests we desire action but a square to Neptune is disorientating and can sap energy. Distraction and deflection are also Neptune problems. Neptune introduces uncertainty in that moment of darkness as the Sun’s light is eclipsed. A tight quincunx to Black Moon Lilith also brings up fears of being cast out, excommunicated, demonised, haunted. As this is a South Node eclipse, it feels a little like the ghost of Christmas past paying us a visit. Make peace with the past. Let go of old beliefs that are holding you back. Stop mourning the unlived life and start living.

Despite some of the challenges of the eclipse, there is a sense of onwards and upwards though. Venus joins the Sun and Mercury in Sagittarius on December 15 where she delights in the warmth of friendly connection and appreciates a no strings attached approach to relationships. In bonded partnerships, Venus in Sagittarius can bring some relief after an intense period. It’s time to have an adventure together! Following the heart now can lead to some exciting opportunities although we do need to check in with ourselves whether we are truly following our desires or just escaping from the humdrum.

Chiron stations direct, also on December 15. After a five-month period of intense self-questioning, painful healing and recovery, now we are ready to continue our journey. In forward motion, Chiron is still connected to healing, but his focus is more about taking what has been learned and applying it to our experience in the outer world. Yes, we may have scars, but in the receiving of these scars we also gained great wisdom. Consider, where can the actions you take in the wider world be a demonstration of your courage to overcome, to live and thrive despite pain? What can you teach? Where can you help?

Next comes the biggest movements of the month which is Saturn’s entry into Aquarius on December 17 followed by Jupiter’s entry into the same sign on December 19. Jupiter and Saturn will then meet in a Great Conjunction on December 21.

The Great Conjunction itself begins a whole new chapter of human history. Aside from the conjunction between Jupiter and Saturn in 1980/81, all the previous conjunctions have been in Earth signs since 1842. Our upcoming conjunction though heralds the beginning of a cycle of Grand Conjunctions in the element of air that will take us through to 2140!

Jupiter’s action is to expand, Saturn’s is to contract, so in their meeting they have the ability to complement one another. Saturn cuts down on Jupiter’s tendency towards excess, Jupiter encourages Saturn to let down walls and break out of limiting constraints. All this activity will be focused on Aquarius, the sign associated with groups, networks, friends, social media, technology, science, politics, progress, advancement. Whilst Saturn in Aquarius may represent a ‘new normal’ as we come to terms with the pandemic, we also have the potential here for big developments that perhaps are born from the restrictions we have lived under. There is a sense that a new infrastructure is being created under this influence, one that may pave the way for Pluto’s transit of Aquarius beginning in 2023. Jupiter and Saturn in Aquarius presents the possibility of significant new advancements in society although the progress is likely to be slow and methodical (Saturn). Given that modern Aquarius ruler Uranus is associated with Higher Mind and intellectualism, we may also see a push towards education. Science and rational may be more favoured as we move forwards (but not, I hope, at the expense of creativity and spirituality).

However, it should also be noted that as Saturn (and Jupiter) will be squaring Uranus next year, we could also see unrest (Uranus), especially if authorities (Saturn) try to impose too many rules and restrictions. This is not just in response to coronavirus but may also be connected to finance, the internet and the general move towards living a more digital life. There is already a drive towards a cashless society, hastened along by the pandemic, but a continued movement towards this may be met with a backlash.

Generally though, the shift away from earth signs to air signs tells us that our emphasis is changing from the material world and capitalism to a period where we focus more on human connection, society, humanitarian causes and concepts. Hopefully, we may see the fall of fascism and authoritarian regimes and the demise of strong right-wing movements that have dominated these last years of Saturn (and Pluto) in Capricorn.

On an individual level, we could consider questions such as, what do I hope for in the future? What structures need to go in place to make this happen? Where do I need to experiment more? Where do I need to advance? How do I use technology in my life – does this benefit me or hold me back? Who are my friends? Who do I want to connect with and be associated with? What part do I play in society?

The Sun’s entry into Capricorn on the same day as the Great Conjunction also blesses this opening of new cycle in human history with even greater significance. This is the winter solstice, the shortest day and the longest night. After this time, the days will become longer until there is equal day and night at the Spring equinox. Symbolically then, this ancient festival of Yule is about the return of the light after a long period of darkness. And for final a cherry on top of the cake (or should I say star on top of the tree!), December 21, is also the date of the First Quarter Moon, putting the Moon slap bang on the Aries point (0 Aries). Whilst there is tension between the Sun and Moon, with Luna on the first degree of the first sign, it seems we have another indication here that this is a time of beginnings. The old order (Capricorn) is changing, and we’re inspired to make a new start (Aries). With old timer Saturn in modernist Aquarius though, it’s about taking the best of the past and putting it to work for our future rather than a complete revolution.

We come to the close of the year on the back of the final square between Mars and Pluto on December 23. This has been a tough aspect and one that has perhaps been the driving force of much of the heated atmosphere in the latter half of this year. Mars first began to engage conflict with Pluto back in July, pushing against an immovable force, wrestling for control. Now as we come to the end of this battle, we see what is possible and what isn’t – where we can take action and where we can’t. Yes, there is still some frustration here but the sense is that we are stronger for it. If we mobilise all our energy into what we can do, then we can enact powerful changes.

The final major aspect of the year is the Full Moon in Cancer on December 30. This lunation brings us to the conclusion of a family matter or emotional issue. Whilst yes there is a painful square to Chiron which means we may be even more sensitive and sentimental around this time, there is also a sextile to Uranus. We have an opportunity to take a different stance or road to break us out of old habits. Familiar patterns are changing and this, combined with Jupiter and Saturn in Aquarius, is the breath of fresh air we were waiting for.

The Astrology of the TV show Supernatural

The end is nigh – well, it is for Supernatural fans in the US. The TV show Supernatural is due to air its final episode ever on November 19, 2020. I am writing this on November 18, and currently only on episode 15 of Season 14 as I started doing a re-watch from the beginning again whilst UK television programmers lazed over air dates for season 15. So, I’m a little behind the times but consciously putting off the buckets of tears I will no doubt shed when this show ends. Supernatural has been my constant for the past 15 years. It’s been there through the dark times of deaths, loss, disability and health issues, and deep depression. It’s been there in the year long solitude of lockdown 2020. It’s been there when I’ve needed to laugh or cry. The characters are old friends, a soft blanket that I put on when I need comfort and the stories sing in my mind giving me endless creative inspiration for my own writing and work. Yes, I’m a fan of cast, crew, writers, characters, set designers – the whole shebang as they say.

My patrons know of my guilty pleasure and one of them asked me recently whether I had ever cast the charts of Sam and Dean so here we are. Seriously, I didn’t need that much encouragement! If you’re a fan of the show then this post will make sense to you, if you’ve never seen the show, then A. you won’t understand most of the references here and B. you need to start watching right now!

This post is of course a bit of fun but still an exercise in understanding astrological language and dynamics and for seeing correspondences between planetary stories and fictional ones. Note that I have chosen interpretations of the aspects that resonate with the storyline so please don’t assume that what happens to these characters will happen to you if you’re having a similar transit or natal aspect! Remember, this is a fictional tale that is larger than life, so we need to go big with our astrological interpretation too. It’s known that the charts of actors often correlate strongly with the characters that they are most famous for but the charts of the characters themselves work too. How? Well, that might be a question for Chuck…

Everything, every moment in time has a chart. The moment for when creator Erik Kripke came up with the birth dates of Sam and Dean was perhaps blessed with a little magic. Everything is connected, past, future and present. The stories we write down here on planet Earth are a reflection of the stories played out by the planets. Astrology is an archetypal language which speaks to the collective unconscious. In olden times it was stories of Gods and monsters, religious tales like those of David and Goliath and Paradise Lost. In modern times, we have Battlestar Galactica, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Game of Thrones and Supernatural. All these tales say something of our experience of being human and endeavour to help us make a connection to one another and ourselves, as well as to entertain.

Supernatural first aired at 9 p.m. Eastern Time on September 13, 2005. The chart for that moment in time puts the Moon on the Midheaven, at the highest point in the sky. This means that the symbolism of the Moon is elevated, uppermost. The Moon rules emotions, home, belonging, mother, family. The show is about family. The two main actors, Jared and Jensen met their partners on the show, married and had children. And, as conventions and fanbase grew, another family was born, the SPN family. One of the key quotes from the show is ‘Family don’t end with blood’.

Out of interest, Jared Padalecki, show headliner who plays Sam, has the Sun, Moon, Mercury and the North Node all in the sign of Cancer (the sign ruled by the Moon). Jensen Ackles has his Sun, Venus and Mercury in Pisces. Both Cancer and Pisces are water signs. I love how this dynamic is reflected in the chemistry between the two actors. Pisces is the ocean, Cancer, the Moon – just as the sea responds to the pull of our satellite , so these two fine actors respond to one another with powerful emotional gravity. It’s compelling to watch them, whether they are joking around or comforting one another through the depths of despair.

The first episode of the show surrounds the death of Mary, the mother of our protagonists and the catalyst for our boys into the world of hunting demons. The motto of Sam and Dean Winchester is ‘saving people, hunting things, the family business. Note that the Moon and the MC are in Capricorn, the sign of business. The Moon is close to Chiron, the wounded healer, demonstrating that whilst we will get to know these boys as ‘helpers/healers’ in this world, we will also see their suffering. The loss of their Mother is a wound that cannot be healed. I spot the Sun in the 5th house of actors and entertainment and Mars (the Warrior – perfect for our hunters) in a Grand Trine with the Moon. Venus (the Goddess of Love) rules the chart suggesting a warm reception to new viewers as well as potential riches. The elevated Moon rules the 3rd house, the part of the chart associated with siblings! In the 3rd house, we find Saturn too, a planet of longevity and also a planet that tells us that this is going to be a long running story about brothers.

I also notice a yod in this chart between Pluto, Jupiter and Mars with Mars at the apex. All the planets are at 21 degrees of their respective signs. Pluto is Lord of the Underworld (hell). Jupiter is the great sky God Zeus (Heaven) and Mars is the warrior – our hunters. Yods are associated with family karma and as we will learn later down the line, the brothers are linked right back to Cain and Abel, their paths destined since the dawn of time. Seriously, it’s such a perfect signature for this chart it makes me wonder whether there was an astrologer on the payroll ?

Before I get to the boys, I’m just going to start with…

O come on, I couldn’t not pull the chart of Baby could I, considering we know the date that she rolled of the production line.

Here’s Baby’s chart. We don’t have a time of birth so to speak, so I put Mars on the Ascendant given that she is a car and Mars rules engines. By perfect heavenly synchronicity, this puts Jupiter, the planet of long-distance travel on her Midheaven. Libra is on her Ascendant, another sign ruled by love Goddess Venus – and we all know how beautiful she is, certainly in Dean’s eyes. Venus is in Gemini, the sign of siblings in the 8th house of mysteries. I love that the Moon is prominent again, this time conjunct the South Node of the chart. It seems perfect for a car passed from generation to generation. Perhaps with the North Node on Baby’s Sun, one day we’ll see them all ride off into the sunset.

The Boys

So then, what of the boys themselves? I played a little with these charts. There is no time of birth alluded to for either Sam or Dean but as we have the birth dates and a timeline for their lives I did a little chart rectification to come up with a possible birth time. Rectification is the art of deriving a time of birth from a list of events in a person’s life along with observation of their personality.

Dean Winchester

Dean Winchester was born on January 24, 1979.  I figured that given that he was the first born and also how family orientated and protective Dean is, he must have a strong Cancerian trait so I went for Cancer on the Ascendant. This puts his ruling planet, the Moon, in his 6th house, a house of service and duty square the Nodal axis. It tells us that matters around emotions, mother and family are critical to his karmic journey.

Putting Cancer on the Ascendant places Dean’s Sun in the 8th house of mysteries, death, hell, darkness, the occult – kinda perfect huh! The Sun is conjunct ‘hunter’ Mars demonstrating Dean’s physical strength, bravery and courage and the life of fighting that he leads. Note that this duo is opposite Jupiter, a planet that magnifies what it touches. We know that sometimes Dean is impulsive (Jupiter amplifies Mars) and he also tends towards excess when it comes to wine, women and food – think pie! His Moon, Venus and Neptune are all conjunct in Jupiter ruled Sagittarius too – a sign that likes a free rein and a lover in every port. But this trio also shows Dean’s capacity for unconditional (Neptune) love (Venus) for his family (Moon). The strong Sagittarius and Jupiter notes to his chart also speak of being well travelled. This is Dean out on the road driving Baby, Sam by his side, travelling from coast to coast, notching up thousands of miles. Asteroid Impala by the way is at 0 Leo in his chart, opposite his Sun and Mars. I also note asteroid Thalia, the Muse of Comedy. is conjunct Dean’s Sun. We all know how funny Dean can be…cue scream from Yellow Fever and “Fight the fairies!”.

Dean’s Sun is in Aquarius, as is Mars, a sign associated with being on the fringes, being different, experimental, unique and occasionally rebellious. Whilst Dean will firmly follow the rules of his father, he doesn’t have much truck with anyone else’s rules. Cue “all angels are dicks” commentary.

Saturn, the co-ruler of his Sun is placed in the 3rd house conjunct both the North Node and the IC (the root of the chart and the self). It perfectly describes how he practically raised his younger brother Sam and the huge responsibilities heaped on him from a young age. Saturn beside the North Node tells us that there is some serious destiny at work here. This aspect also makes me think of Dean meeting the Grim Reaper himself (Saturn) and for a time becoming Death when Death gave him his ring to wear for a day. Over on the MC at the top of the chart, the point that illustrates our life path, we find asteroid Winchester, just two degrees away.

I note that Dean has a yod, also called a ‘Finger of God’ between Pluto (Hell), Black Moon Lilith (Lilith/Rowena) and the South Node (Old Karma). Dean probably wouldn’t like that. Asteroid Atropos sits in his 9th house square his Ascendant/Descendant. Dean killed Atropos, refusing to believe in Fate. But a yod in the chart can express the idea of carrying family karma – and it is often the carrier of karma who must break the pattern once and for all. Also the ‘finger of god’ makes me think of Castiel’s fingers burned into Dean’s skin – “I am the angel who gripped you tight and raised you from perdition”.

Going back to Venus conjunct Neptune in Dean’s chart, this could be an apt description of having the protective love of the angel Castiel. Asteroid Cas is just 3 degrees away from Neptune, wider than the orb I normally use but still, it catches my eye. Asteroid Angel is at 25 Virgo in his chart, trine to Mercury, the ruler of his 12th house of spirituality. Mercury also rules brothers and Dean eventually refers to Castiel as being like his brother. Dean first met Cas in September 2008, just when asteroid Angel was conjunct his natal Venus and Neptune was forming a trine to his natal Venus. Also, Uranus was conjunct his IC rocking him to the core as angels revealed themselves to humankind for the first time in 2000 years.

At this point I mourn the fact that I can’t cast a chart for Cas because he’s too darn old. I don’t have an ephemeris that goes back to primordial times, sorry. But if I did, I would put Cas as a double Pisces ruled by Neptune, maybe with Mars in his 12th house – a spiritual warrior, compassionate and kind, a soldier of God who occasionally loses the plot and gets easily duped by others. But his love for Dean is pure and abiding.

Sam Winchester

Sam Winchester was born on May 2, 1983 in Lawrence, Kansas. In rectifying his chart, I thought about how tall Sam is, how he loves to go running and how he went off to study law before becoming a hunter. All these points lead me to consider Sagittarius as his rising sign, a sign also associated with faith. Of the two boys, earlier in the series, Sam is the one who still prays at night and believes in God and heaven. It is Sam who also says, ‘I believe in us’, words spoken in desperation as he tries to stop Dean from committing suicide.

Putting Sagittarius on the Ascendant brings Uranus conjunct the Ascendant along with Jupiter. Uranus is also the ruler of his 3rd house of siblings so this combination seems to express how Dean is almost larger than life to him. Anything on the Ascendant is magnified. In fact, Sam expresses this in one of the episodes, saying he studied Dean for years because he wanted to be like him.

Sam is well read, good with technology, philosophical and knows ‘the lore’. All expressions of Uranus conjunct Jupiter. Dean regularly refers to him as a nerd.  Yet, there’s a strong rebellious edge to Sam. Despite his sensitive, practical Taurus Sun, sometimes he is unpredictable. It was Sam who rebelled against the family business and went off to study law. It was Sam who hooked up with demon Ruby. I’ll note right here that in his chart, Lilith is conjunct Sam’s Venus and Lucifer is conjunct his Black Moon Lilith! It’s Sam who deep down feels like he can never fit in. Sam feels different. With his Moon square to Pluto, we see the feeling that deep down his soul is marked by the Devil himself (he was fed demon blood as a baby). The Moon square Pluto also represents the death of his mother which still haunts him. In a callous recreation of his Mother’s death, the demon Azazel killed Sam’s girlfriend Jessica in 2005. At the time, Sam was undergoing Pluto (death) opposite Venus (love).

Sam’s gathering of planets in the 6th house feels like a reflection of Dean’s strong 6th house placements. Sam has his Sun here along with Mars, Mercury and Chiron. I note that Mars is only two minutes away from the orb of a conjunction to the Sun so even though it’s wide, we get a repeat of Dean’s Sun-Mars conjunction. It tells us then that Sam identifies with being a hunter too, only for him it was more of a stretch, a label he didn’t want to wear. Perhaps Chiron in this part of the chart also demonstrates the suffering he goes through to be of service to the world. Mercury conjunct Mars shows how he uses his sharp mind as a tool. We also know that Sam loves dogs and a strong 6th house can often manifest as a love of animals. It’s more muted in Dean’s chart but then there was that time in Dog Dean Afternoon, with Dean and the poodle but I digress…

Sam’s Moon is in Capricorn which also suggests someone who has an old head on young shoulders. He was 8 years old when he found out demons exist. His father gave him a gun. In that year, Pluto (evil, demons, monsters) was opposite his natal Mars (fighting, warrior, tools). Whilst Sam’s chart doesn’t contain the sense of heavy responsibility that Dean’s does, his 6th house emphasis shows that he has a need to feel useful and Sam himself often reiterates that he just wants to help.

Whereas Dean has Venus conjunct Neptune, Sam has Venus opposite Neptune and this aspect is across the Nodal axis. Venus opposite Neptune has a tendency to idealise others and to see the good rather than the bad – demon Ruby is a prime example. Neptune on the South Node sesquiquadrate his Sun also illustrates a potential to slide down a slippery slope towards escapism and addiction. I giggle here because the South Node can also represent a drain and Neptune rules the feet – cue ‘I lost my shoe!’. Ultimately, with Venus conjunct the North Node in Gemini (siblings) in the 7th house of partnerships, we see that in Sam’s lifetime, he’s destined to live from the heart, side by side with his brother.

As I look at the charts of the boys right now, and having seen nothing of season 15, I see Dean currently has Pluto conjunct Mercury in the 7th house of relationships and partnerships. It could represent the loss of a brother – uggh, is it Sam, or Cas? I dread to think. I also notice transiting Neptune is conjunct the South Node whilst the South Node is conjunct his natal Neptune. The South Node is an ending, a drain, giving up, release. Neptune is sacrifice, tears. Again, both of these point to a loss in the context of the storyline. Neptune too can represent God, and last time I looked, God was definitely not being the all loving one he’s cracked up to be. Chuck was mad as hell.

In Sam’s chart, Saturn is squaring Pluto suggesting he feels like he’s between a rock and a hard place. Progressed Pluto is closing to a conjunction to his progressed MC signifying an end of career or significant change in his life path, even death. Progressed Chiron is anaretic on a degree we associated with ‘the weeping sisters’ and Neptune is also coming up to a conjunction to his IC, another possible marker of a loss. Damn, I’m going to cry me a river if it’s Cas.

But aside from loss, the strong presence of Neptune in both the boys’ charts also represents something else – peace, quiet, paradise, heaven, the beach and beer. Maybe then, there really will be peace for Sam and Dean, when they are done. I hope so.

Thank you Supernatural for 15 glorious years from a real-life red-haired witch <3

Supernatural Planets, Signs, Points and Asteroids

Saturn (Grim Reaper) for Death and the God of Time Chronos

Gemini (The twins) and Mercury – Brothers, siblings.

Black Moon Lilith – Rowena. We know Rowena is over 300 years old. I’m thinking she must be a Scorpio with Leo Rising given her knowledge of magic, craving for power and regal posture. Leo Rising would absolutely suit her long red mane of hair too.

Pluto could stand for Crowley (as well as asteroid Hel or Ferguson below). I also think Crowley is likely to be a Capricorn as he wears a suit and sees himself as a businessman. I’d imagine there’s some Scorpio there too, perhaps Mercury with a dash of Jupiter, considering his humour and saucy, risqué comments.

Uriel doesn’t have an asteroid, but he is sometimes attributed to Uranus or Mars

Metratron, Balthzar and Gadreel have no named asteroids – heck we should start a campaign! But they would all come under the umbrella of asteroid Angel

Astrological Signatures of Witchcraft

We are now deep into spooky season and Samhain will soon be upon us. As I have been sharing some magickal content over on my Patreon, a couple of my patrons asked whether there was any way of seeing whether someone has a predisposition to witchcraft in the chart. So, in this article I’m going to explore some ideas around this.

To be clear, when I say ‘witchcraft’, I mean the modern spiritual (and mostly Pagan) practice of working with energies, spellcasting and (for some) connection with personified deity. When I first stepped onto the path almost 40 years ago, it was easier to say that all witches are pagans but not all pagans are witches. But as we continue to evolve, I keep my definitions fluid to be inclusive and welcoming to those who don’t necessarily ‘fit’ into those categories. For myself, I define myself as a Pagan witch. I’m old school eclectic and a solo practitioner. What I write here is from my own perspective but it is certainly not intended to lay down any kind of laws about what is and isn’t a marker of the craft in the chart. Witches are as unique as everyone else but, generally speaking, there are some commonalities – and that is what I want to explore here.

Before casting any charts, I had a think about which bodies and parts of the chart might connect to witchcraft. No one aspect, planet or point can be said to make one a witch or indicate such. And in the making of a witch, we must always look to the chart as a whole to see how the path itself might unfold or the meaning of the path for the individual. No doubt there are other players in all the charts but I specifically wanted to look for common themes, so I narrowed it down to a few points to explore.

My first thought was Black Moon Lilith. Lilith is deeply connected to matriarchy and a rebel against patriarchy. She left the Garden of Eden rather than be treated unfairly by Adam and from there she was demonised throughout history. Witches too have been much maligned for their practices – in modern times ridiculed, in olden times tortured, murdered, burned. Lilith herself knows the name of God, therefore revealing her own divine magic and yells ‘hell no’ to the rules that try to suppress her potent energy. She is symbolised by the owl, a creature of powerful insight and age-old wisdom. Just as Lilith has arisen in astrology, so too has interest in witchcraft and astrology grown. She is a feminist figure, and, in the craft, most often witches turn to the divine feminine. I find myself curious to know whether Lilith stands out in well-known witch’s charts. I will look for both Black Moon Lilith and asteroid Lilith. I imagine the former might have a greater part to play as she has more of an air of mystery given her disembodied state.

I also think of Uranus, the rebel, asteroid Circe (a witch in mythology) as well as Hecate, Queen of the Witches (note that the asteroid is spelt ‘Hekate’). Cybele also comes to mind given her title as ‘Great Mother’. Lastly, I also think of Vesta, the ‘Priestess’ given her action which is about devotion and dedication which is part of the witch’s path. There are of course many deity names given to the asteroids as well as the planets themselves. But for now, it’s these that I will focus on. As far as houses are concerned, whilst the 12th house is
connected to spirituality and the 9th house is religion, it is to the 8th house we look to find the occult (which simply means hidden). With the 8th house involvement, perhaps we can also posit a strong Pluto placement or Scorpio presence which could also draw one into this world.

So, below are some quick references to the charts of modern witches and esoteric practitioners. There is so much more I could say about each chart, but I am looking specifically to see whether the signatures I identified above are present. Unfortunately for some we don’t have a time of birth but still, I will offer the insights we can glean from what we do know. For small asteroids (Hekate, Cybele and Circe) I am using a one-degree orb. Black Moon Lilith I have given a three-degree orb. Vesta has a five-degree orb.

Margot Adler
Grand water trine with anaretic Mercury in Pisces (12th house), Black Moon Lilith in Scorpio (8th house) and Mars in Cancer (4th house).
Mercury is also widely opposite to Neptune and conjunct Cybele
Uranus conjunct North Node

Dolores Ashcroft-Nowicki
Scorpio Rising

Hekate conjunct Pluto

Black Moon Lilith conjunct Vesta opposite Chiron
Venus conjunct Pluto

Sybil Leek

Pluto in the 8th house

Francis Desmedt

Mercury conjunct Pluto

Jacques Coutela
Note that this man has a very unpleasant history but he started out as Wiccan so this is why I have included him.
Scorpio Rising
Vesta in the 8th house
Black Moon Lilith conjunct Neptune and opposite asteroid Lilith
Hecate at 29 Leo in the degree of the Nodes

Judith Anodea
Black Moon Lilith square Sun
Uranus opposite Venus
Hekate conjunct Pluto

Maria Simms
Sun, Ceres, Mercury in Scorpio
Pluto conjunct Chiron 8th house
Pluto square Black Moon Lilith
Asteroid Lilith conjunct Venus

Scott Cunningham
Pluto conjunct Ascendant (12th House)
Uranus opposite Black Moon Lilith square Vesta

Hecate opposite Vesta
Cybele conjunct Mercury

Janet Farrar
Time unknown
Black Moon Lilith conjunct Mercury
Sun conjunct Uranus
Vesta 8th House sextile Sun-Venus
Circe conjunct Venus

So, I’ve looked at thirteen charts so far and it seems abundantly clear that Black Moon Lilith is a common factor as are Scorpio/8th House/Pluto links, Uranian links, and Vesta. My idea of Circe and Cybele didn’t really play out but Hekate has come up several times. However, we can’t ever say that a chart that is lacking in such features would mean someone isn’t or couldn’t be a witch. Also, whilst scooting through all these charts, I have noticed that many of these witches have other Goddesses conjunct main points in their chart – such as Ceres/Demeter (understandable given that witches are often connected to Earth Mother deities), Diana and Isis. Hypatia too has caught my eye. Whilst Hypatia wasn’t a goddess or witch (that we know!), as a philosopher, astronomer, and mathematician she was a true wise woman and great woman of her time. She was also pagan and in modern times has become an icon for woman’s rights and feminism. Now I want to do some more work on her!

There are other features also that strike me – stories of Neptune and Pisces. I think this is perhaps inevitable given that the nature of witchcraft is working with otherworldly energies. We speak with the Goddess in our dreams. We travel astral realms. We train our imagination to visualise clearly to create spells. We work with the subtle body and energy and perhaps practice healing. We use divination tools. There is some fluidity to be expected here and I would anticipate perhaps that those drawn to this path might also have certain aspects that speak of communing with the ‘other side’. Check out my article ‘Ghost in the Chart – astrological signatures of spirit communication’ to read more on that. And whilst we’re there, you might also enjoy Ghost in the Deck which speaks of how Spirit communication comes up in tarot readings.

Okay, so let’s have a little fun and see whether any of these witchy astrology connections I identified earlier come up in the charts of actors who have played famous witches. Often actors who become famous characters have certain aspects that strongly reflect the characters they play.

Ruth Connell
Rowena on Supernatural
Time of birth is uncertain, but she has said that she has Virgo Rising.
From her Instagram postings, it seems that Ruthie has a genuine interest in witchy practices.
Sun opposite Uranus (in Scorpio).
IF time of birth is accurate, then it’s possible that her Sun is in the 8th house too.
Black Moon Lilith conjunct Jupiter opposite Pluto. Lilith the witch is magnified by Jupiter! Ruth herself may be tiny in stature, but she is a big (Jupiter) and powerful (Pluto) witch of modern mythology! In the show she is an antagonist initially which would perfectly describe the Jupiter (good) – Pluto (bad) opposition. Remember Zeus is the Great Sky God and Pluto is the Lord of the underworld (hello King of Hell – SPN fans will get that!). There’s a heaven and hell dynamic here symbolically speaking. Yet the witch (Lilith) is conjunct Jupiter which demonstrates how her character ultimately becomes a force for good.
Vesta conjunct Mars – This catches my attention because as a dancer as well as actor she has clearly devoted herself to developing strength and courage. It is also another wonderful description of a red-haired (Mars is the red planet) priestess (Vesta) of magic. Lilith herself too was often described as having red hair in mythology. Along with her anaretic Sun in hot and fiery Aries, no wonder Ruth has flame red hair and some of the characters in SPN refer to Rowena as ‘Red’. And yes, given my extended notes here, you can deduce I am a Supernatural fan 🙂

Shannon Doherty
Prue in Charmed
Pluto conjunct Ascendant
Moon in Scorpio
Sun square Vesta

Alison Hannigan
Willow in Buffy the Vampire Slayor
No time of birth
Black Moon Lilith square Chiron
Sun opposite Pluto
Moon opposite Vesta
P.S. Off topic but Alison also has Eris conjunct her Moon – how perfect for Willow as the Big Bad with Pluto also opposing her Sun! Asteroid Hel is also conjunct her Black Moon Lilith too. I digress – sorry not sorry, I’m also a Buffy fan.

Amber Benson
Tara in Buffy the Vampire Slayer
No time of birth
Sun conjunct Cybele opposite Vesta

Melissa Joan Hart
Sabrina, The Teenage Witch
Black Moon Lilith conjunct Venus opposite Pluto
Vesta conjunct South Node
Hecate conjunct North Node in Scorpio

Elizabeth Montgomery
Samantha Stephens in Bewitched
Sun-Venus-Uranus conjunction square Pluto
Black Moon Lilith (8th House) trine Moon

Kat Graham
Bonnie Bennett in The Vampire Diaries
No time of birth
Possible Moon conjunct Pluto
Vesta conjunct Uranus

So then, out of 20 charts I have looked at so far, sixteen (possibly seventeen) of the charts contain a Pluto/Scorpio/8 house signature. Sixteen charts also have Black Moon Lilith (asteroid Lilith is in two) strongly present. Thirteen charts show a strong Vesta aspect. Ten of the charts contain a strong Uranus aspect.  Of course, there are many other charts I could explore but for now, it seems as though Black Moon Lilith makes her magic felt alongside Pluto, ruler of mysteries, secrets and hidden places. As a practising, witch for almost 40 years with Black Moon Lilith directly conjunct my Sun, it doesn’t surprise me.

Rest In Peace: Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Ruth Bader Ginsburg was born with the Sun, Venus, Ceres and the North Node in Pisces. This is a sign strongly associated with peace, spiritual service, voluntary work, compassion and the collective. The old ruler of Pisces is Jupiter, a planet associated directly with law and lawyers. She also had a packed opposite Virgo house with Mars, the South Node, Neptune and Jupiter giving rise to a passionate desire to be of service.

Ruth was physically tiny but had immense presence and power (Sun trine Pluto). She became a national icon, was a feminist and fought tirelessly for equal rights.

Her extraordinary chart shows Cerberus, the hound of Hades conjunct Mother Goddess Ceres along with Heracles, otherwise known as Hercules – the strong one. Here we begin the see her fierce protective nature, the extreme loyalty to the cause, the defender of mothers. Dejanira (asteroid of victimhood) was conjunct her Sun yet despite going through her own trials and loss in life, she lived this energy to its highest level, fighting against discrimination. Vespa (wasp) also conjunct her Sun, ensured that she never backed down and had no qualms about standing up to others! Again, small but formidable!

A deeply in tune, powerful Moon in Scorpio gave her business acumen and nose for the truth. Elder Saturn widely conjunct wise woman Pallas ensures her lasting legacy throughout history.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg, thank you for your extraordinary service on planet Earth. Rest well with the stars.
