It’s ironic that Britain’s longest-reigning monarch should be succeeded by its shortest-serving Prime Minister, but that’s just what happened when Liz Truss stepped down from office after only 45 days in power. The fact that they both had the same first name is just icing on the cosmic cake in this bizarre juxtaposition. Truss stepped into the breach in the Conservative Party when embattled PM Boris Johnson resigned in the wake of scandal on July 7, but it took two months to wrap up those loose ends before she was officially appointed by Queen Elizabeth II on September 6. Now, just six weeks later, she’s gone.
In part, Truss got caught up in the current closing square between Jupiter, the planet ruling politics, and TNO Chaos, a far-flung bit of space debris that creates turbulent conditions consistent with its name, which is now exact from 0 Aries to 0 Cancer. Following rapid turnover in Cabinet officers and a disastrous “mini-budget” that sent the pound tumbling, Truss’ position as PM became untenable. Chaos’ role in her discomfiture is expressed in its conjunction with the 4 Cancer Descendant for her resignation (1:34 PM BST 20 October 2022, London, UK).
That chart also highlights asteroid Atropos at 1 Capricorn on the 4 Capricorn Ascendant. Atropos is named for the mythic Greek Fate who severs the thread of life at death, and it’s in that context of mortality that we most commonly encounter her. But, like the Death card in the Tarot, Atropos also signals change and endings of all sorts in addition to the cessation of life. Here it suggests an end to Truss’ public image (Ascendant), reinforced by its placement exactly conjunct her natal asteroid London at 1 Capricorn, the city where she worked and announced her resignation.
Born Mary Elizabeth Truss on 26 July 1975 (no time available), asteroid Mary at 10 Taurus closely conjoins the 9 Taurus IC of the resignation chart, keying her personally into the moment. (As is typical of one’s own PNA – Personal-Named Asteroid – which often connects to the Sun, Moon, Ascendant or Mercury, natal Mary at 12 Sagittarius is trine the Sun and embedded at station.) Mary also conjoins TNO Albion at 12 Taurus, an ancient name for Britain, and more widely conjoins Uranus, emblem of unexpected shocks and upsets, at 17 Taurus. Uranus exactly opposes asteroid Elisabetta at 17 Scorpio (one of two PNA referents for Elizabeth), while an exact opposition from asteroid Britten (homophone for “Britain”) at 9 Leo to asteroid Elisabetha at 9 Aquarius (the other Elizabeth referent) transforms this polarity into a loose Grand Cross. (True to form, natal Elisabetha also fits the PNA pattern, falling at 24 Libra in square to Mercury, ruling the naming function, at 26 Cancer.) Elisabetha also conjoins asteroid Lachesis at 4 Aquarius, named for the Fate who determines the span of life (or any other endeavor) and Saturn at 18 Aquarius, symbol of state power as well as its loss.
This Grand Cross ties to Truss’ natal Mars at 17 Taurus, symbol of struggle and stress, and this resignation seems a somewhat fated development, with the Grand Cross also incorporating her natal pairing of asteroids Karma at 15 Leo and NOT at 13 Leo, prefiguring a predetermined (Karma) refusal or abnegation of some sort (NOT). Note that these points are all energized by the upcoming Lunar Eclipse of 16 Taurus on November 8th. More to the point, the Solar Eclipse at 2 Scorpio just five days after her resignation falls tightly on her natal asteroid Nemesis at 1 Scorpio, indicating ruin, downfall, or destruction, often self-created, and exactly squared her natal Sun at 2 Leo.
The Sun of her resignation at 27 Libra is accompanied by Venus at 26 Libra and two more agents of change and transformation, asteroids Requiem (named for the funeral mass for the dead) and Anubis (the Egyptian deity governing funerary rites) at 23 and 24 Libra, which together spell a high profile (Sun) transition (Requiem, Anubis) for a female (Venus). This grouping straddles Truss’ natal asteroid Elisabetha with Uranus at 24 and 28 Libra, engendering controversy (Uranus) for her personally (Elisabetha). The Libra stellium also opposes natal Chaos at 28 Aries, embedded at station, from where it turned retrograde four days after her birth, which itself conjoins an exact pairing of Jupiter with asteroid Britten at 24 Aries, suggesting her involvement with political (Jupiter) turmoil (Chaos) in the UK (Britten).
T-Squared transit Pluto at 26 Capricorn and TNO Eris at 24 Aries, Truss found herself subject to the whims of a disgruntled populace (Eris, evoker of strife and discord; polls showed her as the least popular Prime Minister in British history), prompting the destruction (Pluto) of her career. Transit Pluto’s opposition to transit Britten at 25 Cancer for her appointment on September 6th, still locked in the Eris T-Square, showed the potential for tough times for Britain in the ensuing period of her tenancy of the office, while an opposition from a pairing of asteroids Trussino (closest to Truss) and Dowling (closest to Downing, for the 10 Downing Street address of the UK Prime Minister) at 17 and 19 Scorpio to the Albion/Mary/Uranus group at 13, 15 and 18 Taurus indicated volatility and controversy (Uranus) for the British (Albion) Prime Minister (Dowling), whoever it might be, brought home to Truss by the PNAs Mary and Trussoni linking her directly to this energy. Mary is also stationary, as at birth, turning retrograde a week after her appointment, signifying a literal “change of direction” for Truss, unexpectedly (Uranus) elevated as PM.
A natal combination of asteroid Elisabetta with Dowling at 25 and 27 Aquarius suggests the potential for Truss as PM at some point, but the timing wasn’t right here, with transit Damocles (the doom hanging unseen overhead) haunting this region (exact with Dowling for her appointment, exact with Elisabetha for her resignation) and transit TNO Sedna (named for an Inuit goddess who dwells in the deepest, most inaccessible part of the Arctic Ocean) squaring from 29 Taurus, promoting isolation. Left without support, Truss had no choice but to withdraw, despite describing herself as “a fighter, not a quitter” the day before she resigned.
Truss had experienced an “Achilles Return” at the time of her appointment to the office, with the asteroid representing inherent flaws, weakness and vulnerability (as in “Achilles heel”) transiting its natal degree of 16 Gemini, reinforcing her inborn potential for self-implosion. As well, Achilles came to station to turn retrograde and retrace its steps on October 11th, just as things began to heat up for Truss and the inevitability of her fall became apparent. The Daily Star tabloid paper, riffing on an article in the Economist which compared Liz Truss’ tenure to the lifespan of a lettuce, rigged out a head of iceberg in a blonde wig and began a countdown to see which would have the longer shelf life: Truss’ career as PM or the salad ingredient. The lettuce won.
Regrettably for bad astro-joke aficionados globally, there is no asteroid named Lettuce. There is, however, a Laetitia, a close phonetic match, which appears at 1 Scorpio on the day of Truss’ resignation, conjunct the 9 Scorpio MC of that chart and exactly conjoined her natal Nemesis, squared her Sun, and about to be eclipsed. Natally, Laetitia appears at 15 Leo, exactly conjunct Karma and with asteroid NOT, another indication that the cosmos does in fact have a sense of humor and irony.
Britain isn’t scheduled for a general election until 2024, but the Tories will pick a new leader to be appointed Prime Minister, perhaps within a week. There’s even talk of Boris Johnson returning from the political dead to resume his old post, a zombielike resurrection particularly appropriate for Spooky Season.
After a fairly somnolent summer, the Atlantic hurricane season has been working overtime to make up the deficit, with two powerful storms wreaking havoc up and down the east coast of North America in the last week of September. Hurricane Fiona devastated areas of the Canadian Maritimes on the 24th, while Hurricane Ian pounded central Florida on the 28th with nightmarish winds and massive flooding, traversed the Sunshine State, then refueled in the Atlantic and turned its sights on the Carolinas.
What flipped the switch appears to be a major planetary T-square, relatively long-lived, incorporating Saturn, Uranus and TNO Typhon, into which asteroid Storm intruded for September, creating a Grand Cross. The Saturn/Uranus square saw its last exact alignment in December of 2021, but is still in effect, with these contrasting planets within a degree or so of each other for much of the autumn. Saturn in mid-Aquarius promotes loss and hardship, while Uranus in mid-Taurus provides the power and electric jolt of these super-energized tropical systems. Add TNO Typhon in mid-Scorpio, named for the mythic Greek Titan storm god known for causing hurricanes and floods (and the root of our word “typhoon”), and you have a ready-made recipe for disasters originating at sea.
But the proximate cause of this bout of devastation was asteroid Storm, which in mid-Leo spent most of the month triggering one or the other of the arms of this Grand Cross. By September 15th, when Fiona was named, Storm was at 16 Leo, just shy of an exact triggering square to Typhon at 17 Scorpio, followed by a square to Uranus at 18 Taurus, and an opposition to Saturn at 19 Aquarius.
Adding fuel to the fire was the Neptune conjunction with asteroid Nemesis, exact on September 21st, but well within orb throughout the month. Nemesis indicates ruin or destruction, while Neptune identifies the sea as the source of that devastation. This dynamic duo was further highlighted by the Sun’s passage in opposition, at its most intense September 15-18, but effective for weeks. Not to be outdone, asteroid Flood in mid-Sagittarius was opposing Mars in mid-Gemini, bringing together the planet of violence, action and energy with a minor body representing the deluges to ensue.
Even at Fiona’s inception, its potential for destruction was easy to see. When the storm, then a Tropical Depression, was named on September 15th, asteroid Fionapaine (one of two Fiona CNAs – Compound-Name Asteroids, bodies which have both first and last names strung together as one word, but which can be separated and used as a referent for either) at 28 Aquarius closely conjoined Damocles at 27 Aquarius, the impending doom hanging overhead, also conjoined asteroid Sturm (German for “storm”) at 2 Pisces.
With Jupiter at 5 Aries opposed Mercury retrograde at 7 Libra, it was plain that a major (Jupiter) weather event (Mercury) was brewing, and Fiona’s ultimate goal was depicted by PNAs (Personal-Named Asteroids) representing the geographic areas it would impact, more than a week later. Nova Scotia (Latin for “New Scotland”) was among these, with asteroid Scott (for Scotia) at 17 Aquarius conjunct Saturn and joining the Grand Cross, and asteroid Scotti (also for Scotia) at 6 Cancer forming a T-Square of the Jupiter/Mercury polarity. New Brunswick was also under the gun, with asteroid Brunszvik (an Eastern European rendering of “Brunswick”) at 20 Cancer opposing powerful, devastating and transformative (for good or ill) Pluto at 26 Capricorn, locked in another T-Square with asteroid Canada-Assandri at 23 Libra, identifying the general geographic locale. The Sun at 22 Virgo was exactly conjoined asteroid Labs (for Labrador, another province severely affected), opposed that Neptune/Nemesis conjunction, then at 24 and 25 Pisces.
Prince Edward Island saw some of the worst conditions recorded, with a storm surge of six feet that left “unprecedented” damage to structures and claimed at least one human life. PEI is represented celestially by asteroids Eduarda, which at 1 Scorpio is an exact match for asteroid Fionawood (the second Fiona CNA); Edoardo, which at 17 Sagittarius conjoined asteroid Storm and opposed Mars; and Prinz (German for “prince”), which at 1 Capricorn ties to the Jupiter/Mercury opposition by T-Square.
Storm damage in the Maritimes is estimated at between $300 and $700 million, in infrastructure and natural resources such as timber. The impact on that industry can be seen in the Sun/Labrador conjunction with asteroid Forrestpeterson (for “forests”) at 21 Virgo, and asteroid Forestmartin’s (ditto) inclusion in the Grand Cross, conjunct asteroid Storm from 18 Leo. Hundreds of thousands were without power for days after Fiona’s landfall, and the cleanup could take months.
This figure pales, however, in comparison with the havoc wreaked in Florida and the US Atlantic coast by Hurricane Ian, which made landfall as a high-level Category Four storm, just a few miles per hour under the Cat Five designation. The path of devastation across central Florida was truly surreal to see, like something out of an apocalyptic movie. Early estimates of damage put it at upwards of $50 billon, making it one of the costliest storms in US history. Millions of people were without power for extended periods, countless numbers of homes and businesses damaged or destroyed, and at least 78 lives have been lost.
Ian’s Florida landfall came at 3:05 PM EDT on 28 September 2022, at Cayo Costa, a barrier island due west of Fort Myers, and a chart set for that time shows the overwhelming impact the storm would make. There is no exact asteroid match for Ian, but there are more than a dozen CNAs that begin with that name. Several figure prominently in the landfall chart, which also highlights regions which would be hardest hit.
In advance of the storm, nine Florida counties were singled out as probable disaster areas, based on forecasting. Three of these, Lee, Charlotte and Collier counties, have exact asteroid matches; two others, Pinellas and Hardee, have close referents, in asteroids Pinelli and Hardy (the four remaining – Desoto, Sarasota, Hillsborough and Manatee – have no celestial markers). The communities of Fort Myers, Naples and Orlando, which saw some of Ian’s worst effects, are represented by asteroids Myers, Napolitania (a variation of a term meaning “resident of Naples”) and Orlandi (closest to Orlando).
Still in effect is the Grand Cross of Saturn (19 Aquarius), Uranus (18 Taurus), TNO Typhon (now at 18 Scorpio) and asteroid Storm (now at 21 Leo) which saw such a huge bump-up in frequency and intensity of tropical storms in September. Joining the fray are three Ian referents: asteroid Ianwong a 23 Taurus with Uranus, asteroid Iankubik at 17 Aquarius with Saturn, and asteroid Ianlyon at 17 Scorpio with Typhon. Talk about cosmic overkill! Also present is the Moon at 11 Scorpio, another referent for water and the sea; and asteroids Lee at 14 Scorpio, for Lee County (which includes Fort Myers), and Myers at 26 Scorpio, for Fort Myers. Myers is also squared exactly by Damocles at 26 Aquarius, defining where the looming threat would fall, and by asteroid Sturm at 0 Pisces.
Several of Ian’s other celestial emissaries find themselves in significant placement. The Sun at 5 Libra opposes asteroid Ianmclean at 9 Aries with Jupiter (ramping up the effects) at 3 Aries, granting the name enhanced public visibility for the period. Asteroid Ianbanks at 6 Taurus pairs with asteroid Charlotte (for Charlotte County, where flooding of the Peace River closed US 41) at 7 Taurus, both powerfully angular on the 4 Taurus IC; these also oppose the Moon, with asteroid Hardy (for Hardee County, which remained submerged, with 99% of residents still without power a day later) at 8 Leo on the fulcrum of a T-square. Asteroid Ianwessen at 20 Sagittarius aligns with asteroid Flood at 15 Sag and asteroid Collier (for Collier County) at 14 Sag, in an all-too-apt image of the flooding there, which includes Naples.
Mercury rules weather conditions generally, and at 25 Virgo it opposes asteroid Nemesis with Neptune, at 22 and 23 Pisces, which speaks to ruin or destruction (Nemesis) from the sea (Neptune). Joining Mercury are asteroids Ianrees at 19 Virgo, Napolitania (for Naples) at 27 Virgo, and Pinelli at 29 Virgo (for Pinellas County); the placename asteroids here are also within orb of the 5 Libra Sun, which highlights whatever it touches, for good or ill. Mercury also rules cars, and Ian lifted and moved an impressive number of “floaters” throughout the region, autos which the storm relocated blocks from where it encountered them, as well as tearing myriad boast and yachts from their moorings, and depositing them thousands of feet inland.
After overwhelming the Fort Myers area with 155 mph winds and a storm surge up to 18 feet above ground level, Ian proceeded to cross the state, deluging Orlando enroute, creating “catastrophic flooding” from up to 20 inches of rain. This is reflected in the chart by asteroid Orlandi, which at 17 Gemini conjoins energetic, violent Mars at 19 Gemini, and opposes asteroid Flood with Ianwessen at 15 and 20 Sagittarius.
Downgraded temporarily to a Tropical Storm, after leaving Florida Ian again strengthened into a Category One hurricane before making its second US landfall in South Carolina, where it dumped copious amounts of rain and battered the state with high winds, causing further damage and flooding. Asteroid Carolina at 1 Libra is highlighted by the Sun and Mercury, throwing continued focus (Sun) on a weather event (Mercury).
All told, damage from Ian is likely to total between $75 and $80 billion dollars, making it one of the top five costliest hurricanes in US history. Asteroid Storm will move out of range of the Grand Cross by mid-October, but the underlying T-Square of Saturn, Uranus and Typhon continues throughout the remainder of the Atlantic hurricane season into December, perhaps prompting more devastating encounters between nature and humanity.
On 21 September 2022, New York State Attorney General Letitia James won the race to be the first to charge Donald Trump with a crime. The former US President faces legal jeopardy on a variety of fronts, and the civil suit brought against Trump, his adult children Don Jr, Eric and Ivanka, and the Trump Organization may be the least harrowing, though, if successful, would devastate his business. A civil suit carries no threat of incarceration, but AG James stated in her press conference announcing the indictment that both state and federal laws were broken, and she will be making criminal referrals to both the US Attorney’s office at the Southern District of New York and the IRS.
In a 280-page indictment, James alleges more than 200 “false and misleading financial asset valuations” over a ten-year period, knowingly asserted to defraud financial and government institutions. Trump “grossly and fraudulently misstated” the value of 23 assets, sometimes inflating them to obtain bank loans, and at others devaluing assets to reap tax benefits. In her words, “This is not the Art of the Deal – it’s the art of the steal.”
As part of the lawsuit, James is seeking repayment of $250 million in allegedly ill-gotten gains; Trump and the children named in the lawsuit would be permanently barred from serving as the director of a business registered in New York state. James is also seeking to cancel the Trump Organization’s corporate certificate, which could effectively force the company to cease operations in New York.
As stated by AG James at the press conference: “This conduct cannot be brushed aside and dismissed as some sort of good-faith mistake. The statements of financial condition were greatly exaggerated, grossly inflated, objectively false, and therefore fraudulent and illegal. And as a result of that we are seeking relief, and Mr. Trump, the Trump Organization, his family – they should all be held accountable.”
This initial indictment comes as transit asteroid d’Arrest, noted for the filing of charges, detention and arrest, prepares to return to its natal degree in Donald Trump’s chart. At 16 Libra, transit d’Arrest conjoins transit asteroid Laetitia, for Letitia James, at 20 Libra, uniting the prosecutor with the indictment, and squares transit asteroid Justitia at 13 Capricorn, named for the Roman goddess of justice, bringing the New York Department of Justice into play, as well as signaling that the indictment (d’Arrest) is a just one (Justitia).
Transit d’Arrest also conjoins Trump’s natal centaur Chiron (wounding) at 14 Libra and natal Jupiter (courts and legal matters) at 17 Libra; Jupiter here also represents the extreme exaggerations and self-aggrandizement that precipitated the indictment (AG James cites as example the inflation of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago property’s value from an actual $75 million to $739 million, almost a tenfold increase, and the misrepresentation of his Trump Tower apartment, claiming 30,000 square feet when the actual size is closer to 11,000), while Chiron suggests the maverick behaviors Trump engaged in with his falsifications.
Transit d’Arrest is also within orb of natal d’Arrest at 24 Libra. This places Trump within the scope of his “d’Arrest Return”, a period when a reset of natal potentials for a point occurs, reactivating and reenergizing its inherent and latent possibilities. The fact that d’Arrest is at station (it turned direct two days after his birth), making possible legal charges a major element of Trump’s biography, just reinforces its importance. It’s a factor whose time has finally come.
More to the point, transit d’Arrest is exactly squared to an exact natal conjunction of asteroids Nemesis, representing a point of ruin or undoing, often self-created, and Bilk at 16 Cancer. Bilk is named for an observatory in Dusseldorf, Germany, but acts in its English language capacity as fraud or deception, especially related to financial matters. Having these two in exact conjunction at birth plants the seeds of downfall relating to financial misconduct, which so far Trump has managed to avoid, despite manifest and manifold infractions in this sphere throughout his life. Having natal d’Arrest in square suggests legal jeopardy ensuing at some point from this combination; transit d’Arrest in exact square reiterates that now is the moment for that potential to unfold.
Beginning at 11:38 AM EDT on 21 September 2022 in Manhattan, NY, the chart for AG James’ press conference shows 26 Scorpio rising, which closely conjoins Trump’s natal IC at 24 Scorpio, with the Descendant at 26 Taurus on his natal MC at 24 Taurus. This axis has been hit by Lunar Eclipses twice in the past year, one at 27 Taurus on the MC last November, and one at 25 Scorpio on the IC in May, providing a one-two punch that affects Trump’s reputation (MC) and his internal sense of security (IC).
With the Ascendant are asteroids James at 23 Scorpio, Troemper at 27 Scorpio, Karma at 1 Sagittarius and Manhattan at 4 Sag. James and Troemper (our celestial referent for The Donald) identify the chief combatants in this legal battle, while Karma shows accountability, being called to atone for prior misdeeds, and Manhattan pinpoints the locale for the indictment. Interestingly, Karma exactly conjoins Trump’s natal asteroid Veritas, Latin for “truth”, and also conjoins natal Troemper at 2 Sagittarius – the truth about Trump is about to come out, and he’ll be paying the price. Asteroid Donn, for Donald, appears at 22 Leo, in square to the Ascendant, James and Troemper, further tying Trump to the moment and his adversary. Transit Damocles at 26 Aquarius completes a Grand Cross and represents the doom hanging overhead, about to descend at any moment.
The specifics of the charges can be seen in points aligning with the Vertical Axis of the chart, with asteroid Bilk at 2 Virgo conjoined the 9 Virgo MC, while asteroid Lie at 11 Pisces opposes Bilk, on the 9 Pisces IC. Fraud (Bilk) and deception (Lie) are the chief underlying components of the indictment, both foundational (IC) and on full display for all to see (MC); with Bilk conjoined Trump’s natal Ascendant at 29 Leo, the point governing how we are perceived by the public, others may now come to see him as the con artist he is.
The transit Sun at 28 Virgo opposes transit Neptune at 23 Pisces, with asteroids Nemesis at 23 Pisces and Themis at 19 Pisces. Nemesis again underscores the likelihood of a self-created ruin or downfall, while Neptune is the planetary ruler of deception and Themis is named for the Greek goddess of justice. This polarity forms a Grand Cross with Trump’s natal Sun at 22 Gemini and Moon at 21 Sagittarius, bringing home these energies very directly and personally to Trump.
Also with the Sun is transit Venus at 20 Virgo, representing financial matters; Venus exactly conjoins Trump’s natal asteroid Swindle, yet another indicator of fraudulent fiscal dealings. Natal Swindle squares an exact Uranus/Themis conjunction at 17 Gemini (both conjunct the natal Sun), which in itself suggests a controversy (Uranus) involving the law (Themis). This conjunction is tightly squared by transit Themis at 19 Pisces, and more broadly by transit Lie at 11 Pisces, and is exactly conjoined by transit Swindle at 17 Gemini, as well as transit asteroid Achilles, a point noted for weakness or vulnerability, at 18 Gemini (not to mention transit Mars at 16 Gemini, prefiguring the legal (Themis) battle (Mars) to ensue).
The transit Moon at 9 Leo conjoins Trump’s natal asteroid Hybris at 8 Leo and Pluto at 10 Leo. Hybris represents prideful arrogance, again leading to a fall, while Pluto indicates a devastating loss or transformation. Trump’s hubris (Hybris) in so outrageously and egregiously manipulating (Pluto) his financial filings over decades has led directly to this pending implosion (Pluto).
Transit Saturn at 19 Aquarius is widely opposed the Moon but closely conjoined natal Justitia at 18 Aquarius; the combination represents penalties (Saturn) enacted by the New York Justice Department (Justitia, in the form of Letitia James). Together, transit Saturn, Swindle/Achilles and d’Arrest/Laetitia form a Grand Trine depicting the AG’s (Laetitia) charges (d’Arrest) of fraud (Swindle) and the former president’s (Saturn, as Chief Executive) vulnerability (Achilles).
What of Trump’s codefendants, his children Don Jr, Eric and Ivanka? They’re here, too, with asteroid Donn (suitable for both father and son) at 22 Leo squared Damocles at 26 Aquarius, imaging the threatened doom; asteroid Ivanka at 15 Gemini a part of the Mars/Swindle/Achilles stellium, tying her actively (Mars) to exposure (Achilles) for the fiscal shenanigans (Swindle); and asteroid Eric at 2 Libra exactly conjunct Mercury (a newsworthy event) and within orb of the Sun, throwing a spotlight on his involvement.
Natally, asteroid James at 1 Aries is semisquare Trump’s natal Lie at 17 Taurus, with natal asteroid Laetitia at 4 Taurus in square to natal Pluto at 10 Leo and semisquare Themis at 17 Gemini, theoretically making Letitia James (Laetitia, James) the ideal person to expose Trump’s lies and deception (Lie), someone powerful (Pluto) enough to finally bring him to justice (Themis).
Whatever the outcome, it won’t be the orange jumpsuit so many have hoped for, and which Donald Trump so richly deserves, but it’s a start, and there’s plenty of time, and opportunity, for that.
Although national mourning and celebration of the late Queen Elizabeth II’s life has been protracted for more than ten days after her passing, the official State Funeral ceremony is slated to begin in Westminster Abbey at 11 AM BST on Monday, 19 September 2022. Much of the passing chart remains in effect, but there are significant changes and additions which reflect the funeral itself.
We won’t be using most death indicators for this interpretation, as that time is past. There are three, however, which also have special relevance to a funeral: these are asteroid Requiem, named for the funeral mass for dead; asteroid Anubis, named for the ancient Egyptian deity governing funerary rites; and Rip, in its acronym form “RIP”, a common tombstone inscription. We’ll also be adding centaur Hylonome, noted for expressions of grief, often extreme; asteroids Grieve and Graves, for obvious reasons; and asteroids West and Abbe, to represent Westminster Abbey, where the ceremony occurs.
The 11 AM time in London gives an Ascendant of 10 Scorpio, with asteroid Graves at 10 Taurus exactly on the Descendant, highlighting the pending interment. With Graves is TNO Albion at 13 Taurus, named for an ancient term for Britain. In square is asteroid Rey at 11 Leo, Spanish for “king”, with a Grand Cross completed by asteroid Elisabetha at 8 Aquarius, already at its station degree (Elisabetha will turn direct a week later, on September 26th). This spells out a funeral (Graves) for Britain’s (Albion) monarch (Rey), Elizabeth II (Elisabetha).
Also at station is centaur Hylonome, which at 19 Capricorn will turn direct on the 30th. Hylonome squares asteroid Grieve at 17 Aries, with asteroid King at 11 Aries, speaking again to mourning (Hylonome, Grieve) for a sovereign (King). Hylonome also conjoins Pluto, modern lord of death, at 26 Capricorn, which ties it to a T-Square of asteroid Britten (homophone of Britain) at 29 Cancer, exactly squared asteroid Elisabetta with asteroid Church on the fulcrum at 29 Libra. This reads as grief and mourning (Hylonome) for the death (Pluto) of Elizabeth II (Elisabetta), in the Abbey venue (Church).
Also hitting that theme is a Grand Cross of asteroid Queen’s at 5 Capricorn, opposed the Moon at 12 Cancer, squared Mercury at 4 Libra and a pairing of asteroids Requiem with Anubis at 10 and 13 Libra, and asteroid Roy (Old French for “king”) at 2 Aries, with an exact Jupiter/asteroid London conjunction at 4 Aries. This denotes a newsworthy event and Press coverage (Mercury) of the public (Moon) funeral (Requiem, Anubis) of a female (Moon) sovereign (Queen’s, Roy) in Britain’s capital (London).
Jupiter rules royalty generally, as well as indicating the outsized nature of the ceremony and its religious overtones. Its exact conjunction with London can also be seen as the large gathering of foreign and domestic royals for the funeral, with 17 crowned heads and their spouses or heirs expected to attend the funeral, among a crowd of some 500 dignitaries and 2000 guests. Almost three dozen near relations, descendants of the Queen’s grandfather George V, will attend, as well as presidents, premieres, and representatives of governments from across the globe.
Venus at 17 Virgo appears with asteroids West and Rip at 15 and 12 Virgo respectively, a symbol of the funeral (Rip) of a beloved (Venus) personage at Westminster Abbey (West). The Sun at 26 Virgo closely conjoins asteroid Abbe at 25 Virgo, putting the funeral site in the spotlight; this opposes Neptune at 23 Pisces, planetary ruler of sorrow.
More to the point, the Sun/Abbe conjunction opposes Elizabeth II’s natal asteroid Graves at 20 Pisces, as well as natal Hylonome, exact with natal London at 22 Pisces. This depicts a highlight (Sun) on an outpouring of grief (Hylonome) in the capital (London), focused (Sun) on a funeral (Graves) in Westminster Abbey (Abbe). The natal Hylonome/London pairing is more than apt, as a preview of the intense mourning displayed there, with queues of ordinary citizens extending up to 5 miles from her lying-in-state in Westminster Hall, and waits of as much as 30 hours to view her catafalque. Crowds were so large that admission to the queue was suspended for six hours on Friday the 16th; in total, nearly three-quarters of a million are expected to file past the Queen to pay their respects. The lying-in-state commenced in Westminster Hall at 5 PM BST on Wednesday the 14th, and continues 24 hours a day until the viewing is terminated at 6:30 AM the day of the funeral. During this period, asteroids Grieve and Hall were in square, from 18 to 17 Aries and 14 through 16 Cancer.
The Queen’s natal asteroid Grieve at 5 Taurus conjoins her Sun, and is activated by the Descendant and asteroid Graves for the funeral. The funeral MC at 25 Leo squares the Queen’s natal asteroid Requiem at 22 Scorpio, while transit Grieve at 17 Aries conjoins natal Anubis at 20 Aries, providing real-time, in-the-moment links to these points which relate most strongly to funerals and memorials.
As following the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, 25 years before, masses of floral tributes have been left for Her Majesty, outside Buckingham Palace and other royal residences. But the palace staff learned some valuable lessons from that experience, when the offerings were allowed to remain and accrue until after Diana’s funeral; some 60 million flowers had to be cleared in the aftermath, with an estimated weight of 10-15 tons. This time around, flowers are cleared daily to make room for more, so there’s no telling how the two women compare in floral memorials. But flowers are certainly a prime focus of the event, as asteroid Flora attests. Named for the Roman goddess of flowers (and the root of our words floral and florist), she appears at 12 Scorpio in the funeral chart, closely conjoined the 10 Scorpio Ascendant, part of the Grand Cross with Graves, Rey and Elisabetha.
The ceremony was officiated by David Hoyle, Dean of Westminster, and Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, England’s leading prelate. Dean Hoyle’s moment in the sun is seen by asteroid Hoyle at 22 Pisces, opposed the Sun/Abbe conjunction. The Archbishop is represented by asteroid Canterbury, which at 5 Libra conjoins Mercury at 4 Libra and asteroid Requiem at 10 Libra, and is exactly squared asteroid Queen’s at 5 Capricorn marking Archbishop Welby (Canterbury) as the principal speaker (Mercury) at his former sovereign’s (Queen’s) funeral (Requiem).
Although the ceremony is being held in London, the Queen will be interred privately with her husband Prince Philip at the family crypt in St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, as portrayed by transit asteroid George at 1 Scorpio, opposing transit Graves and within orb of the Ascendant. Elizabeth’s reunion with her husband is reflected in the placement of asteroids Prinz (German for Prince) and Philippa (feminine version of Philip) at 2 and 6 Capricorn, flanking asteroid Queen’s at 5 Capricorn.
With this final act, the long life and seemingly endless reign of Elizabeth II passes into history. None of her successors is likely to reign as long, nor preside over so much change and transformation. May she rest in peace.
She advised 15 Prime Ministers, interacted with 14 American presidents and 7 popes, but the long life and seventy-year reign of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II came to a peaceful close on 8 September 2022, when the 96-year-old sovereign passed away in her sleep at her private estate of Balmoral Castle in Scotland. Most of the United Kingdom’s population – indeed, most of the world – cannot recall a time when Elizabeth was not Queen; her reign spanned the post-World War II era to our post-Modern society, and her life saw massive technological change, from telegraphs to Twitter.
Through it all the Queen was a rock, an anchor, a lodestar, a point of national focus and international attention. Perhaps the richest woman in the world, certainly among the most-photographed persons on the planet, Elizabeth was an icon of stability, steadfastness, propriety and honor, a self-contradictory mix of privilege and duty. Considered staid by some, stodgy by others, time seemed to sweep over and above her, leaving her untouched in a sea of change.
But all things must end, time always wins, and the throne now passes to King Charles III, the man-who-thought-he’d-never-be-king. We’ll be profiling the new sovereign in due course, but for now let’s pause and reflect on the life and passing of his remarkable mother.
No exact time of death has been released as of this writing, but a little online sleuthing revealed that newly-minted UK Prime Minister Liz Truss was passed a note in Commons at 4:21 PM BST, after which she and the leader of the opposition unexpectedly left the floor. So I’ll be focusing on that as the approximate time of death, but we’ll also take a look at 5:30 PM BST, which was when the public announcement came, via the Royal Family Twitter account.
The 4:21 PM BST time yields an Ascendant in Balmoral of 7 Capricorn, with an MC of 22 Scorpio. This squares very well with Elizabeth II’s birth chart (born 21 April 1926, 2:40 AM GDT in Mayfair, London England; Rodden Rating AA), with the Ascendant exactly opposing natal asteroid Elisabetta at 7 Cancer (one of two PNAs – Personal Named Asteroids – for Elizabeth), which thus is setting exactly on the passing chart’s Descendant, representing the West, the traditional direction of death. The Ascendant also opposes natal asteroid Lachesis, arbiter of lifespans, at 10 Cancer, and is squared by transit asteroid Queen’s at 3 Capricorn. The 22 Scorpio MC is even more powerful, exactly conjoining her natal asteroid Requiem, named for the funeral mass for the dead, and also within orb of natal Saturn, ancient lord of death, at 24 Scorpio and the natal MC at 25 Scorpio.
The transit Moon at 22 Aquarius is exactly squaring the passing MC and natal Requiem, conjoined transit Saturn at 20 Aquarius and transit Damocles (the doom hanging unseen overhead) at 27 Aquarius. Certainly the death of any 96-year-old cannot come as a great surprise, but, having been well enough to receive her newest Prime Minister just two days prior, the Queen’s passing was unexpected and well reflects Damocles’ “unseen” qualities. The Moon is also exactly conjoined natal Jupiter, ruling royalty, and opposes transit asteroid Osiris at 18 Leo, named for the Egyptian god of the dead, as well as natal asteroid Rey (Spanish for “king”) and Neptune, at 21 and 22 Leo. Transit Saturn is also exactly conjoined natal Mars.
The Sun at 16 Virgo is exactly opposing natal asteroid Queen’s at 16 Pisces, also opposing natal asteroid Elisabetha (the second PNA for Elizabeth) at 11 Pisces. Elisabetha is also being squared exactly in real time by transit asteroid Atropos at 11 Sagittarius, named for the mythic Greek Fate who severs the thread of life at death.
Let’s shift gears here a moment to compare the Angular movement between the approximate time of her death and its formal, public announcement. That came via the Royal Family Twitter account at 5:30 PM BST, which shows an Ascendant of 0 Aquarius and an MC of 8 Sagittarius. Rising on the Ascendant now is transit asteroid Lachesis at 3 Aquarius, named for Atropos’ sister Fate, who determines the span of life; 0 Aquarius is also exactly squared Elizabeth’s natal Sun degree of 0 Taurus (which is also Charles’ natal Moon degree). With Lachesis is transit Elisabetha at 9 Aquarius, also within orb of the Ascendant, specifying whose death is being announced. Transit Elisabetha also conjoins natal Atropos at 13 Aquarius.
Transit Atropos at 11 Sagittarius is now cresting the 8 Sag MC, which is itself exactly squared the Queen’s natal asteroid Rip at 8 Virgo (which functions as a death indicator via the acronym “RIP”, “Rest In Peace”, a common tombstone inscription). Natal Rip is embedded at station (it turned direct six days after her birth) and conjoined another stationary body, asteroid Scott at 9 Virgo (which turned direct 2 May 1926). Together, these prognosticate a death (Rip) in Scotland (Scott), which is where Balmoral is located. In fact, the chart is almost location-specific, with asteroid Balmer, closest to Balmoral, opposing Rip from 4 Pisces. (The connection between Elizabeth, death and Scotland is reiterated in the transit sky, with transit Scott at 18 Aquarius conjoined transit Elisabetha at 9 Aquarius, transit Saturn at 20 Aquarius and natal Atropos at 13 Aquarius. Meanwhile, transit Balmer at 5 Leo, conjoining asteroid Rey (Spanish for “king”) at 8 Leo, opposes Lachesis with Elisabetha at 3 and 9 Aquarius.) Both charts fittingly highlight personal elements and death indicators in angular prominence.
To return to the passing chart, transit Rip at 7 Virgo is preparing to return to its natal place, reactivating that potential. And it’s not travelling alone – in tow are asteroid Regina (Latin for “queen”) at 1 Virgo and Venus at 4 Virgo, suggesting the passing (Rip) of a beloved, female (both Venus) monarch (Regina).
Death in the news that day is foretold by asteroid Anubis (named for the Egyptian deity governing funerary rites) at 9 Libra conjunct Mercury (the Press, news) at 8 Libra, squaring the 7 Capricorn Ascendant, in a T-Square with natal Elisabetta. That it was a royal death is underscored by Anubis/Mercury opposed Jupiter, ruling royalty generally, at 6 Aries, as well as asteroids Roy (Old French for “king”) and King at 5 and 13 Aries respectively.
Transit Elisabetta at 22 Libra squares transit Pluto (modern lord of death) at 26 Capricorn, which exactly opposes transit asteroid Britten (homophone of “Britain”) at 26 Cancer. This T-Square interacts directly with a natal one, composed of the Ascendant at 21 Capricorn, asteroid Regina at 23 Libra, and Anubis at 20 Aries.
Queen Elizabeth II’s death was heralded by a Lunar Eclipse on May 16, 2022, which at 25 Scorpio fell exactly on her MC, highlighting natal Saturn and Requiem as well. The Solar Eclipse of April 30th at 10 Taurus squared her natal Moon (ruling health generally) at 12 Leo, as well as natal asteroid Atropos at 13 Aquarius. The upcoming Solar Eclipse of October 25th at 2 Scorpio opposes her natal 0 Taurus Sun and exactly squares her progressed Sun at 2 Leo, while the upcoming Lunar Eclipse of 8 November at 16 Scorpio again squares natal Atropos and her Moon.
I have already detailed many aspects of the Queen’s life and nativity in a prior post on her Platinum Jubilee last February, but there’s one character trait I neglected to mention. Stoic and deadpan in public, in private Elizabeth was the family comedian, witty and ebulliently fun-loving. She had a gift for mimicry and greatly appreciated the absurdity of things going wrong at formal affairs (provided they didn’t go too wrong, of course!), with the juxtaposition of ceremony and comedy.
That may be attributed to two key placements in her birth chart. Asteroid Thalia, named for the Greek Muse of comedy, appears at station, having turned direct the day before her birth at 14 Virgo, sesquiquadrate her Sun. And asteroid Hilaritas, named for the Roman goddess of cheer and mirth (and root of our word “hilarity”), falls at 8 Aries, conjunct Mercury at 4 Aries, allowing her to give voice to her comedic insights and impressions of others. It’s a shame the public was rarely witness to this endearing side of her, but as Queen, Elizabeth likely would have found that inappropriate in most situations.
The nature of inherited monarchy is such that it is seamless: “The Queen is dead, long live the King!” And so the passing chart of the former sovereign becomes the accession chart of his or her successor. The last breath of the old monarch becomes the first breath of the new reign.
Therefore, we should be able to see Charles III in the passing chart of his mother.
And so we do. Charlotte is the closest English language name approximating Charles, for which there is no exact asteroid match. Asteroid Charlotte at 8 Taurus is at station, about to turn retrograde on September 10th, the very day Charles’ accession will be formally announced. Stations represent literal “turning points” for those associated with them, which is surely the case now for the man with perhaps the longest job apprenticeship in history. At age 73, Charles becomes the oldest heir apparent to inherit the throne. But his right to do so is celestially underscored by asteroid Charlotte’s conjunction with TNO Albion at 13 Taurus, a name which refers to ancient Britain, and its exact square to asteroid Rey at 8 Leo, the Spanish word for “king.”
Charles is further highlighted by asteroid Carol, a form of Carolus (Latin for Charles), which at 9 Pisces is opposed by the spotlighting Sun at 16 Virgo, T-Squared with Atropos at 11 Sagittarius. Like all kings, Charles buys his throne with a blood price. What he does with his inheritance, and how long he has to do so, remain for the future to reveal.
It didn’t quite make it to fifty, but for almost half a century legal abortion has been the law of the land here in the US. No more.
On June 24, 2022, the gavel fell on Roe v Wade, the landmark 1973 decision guaranteeing reproductive rights, overturned 5-4 by the current US Supreme Court. The test case which led to Roe’s reversal was Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which sought to prevent a Mississippi state law virtually eliminating abortion after 15 weeks from conception. That law was upheld 6-3, but Chief Justice John Roberts joined the progressive minority on the Court when Roe itself became the target of his conservative colleagues.
A leaked draft opinion predicting this outcome caused a huge stir when it became public on May 2, but that was nothing compared to the backlash brewing now. Roe undone doesn’t automatically outlaw abortion across the nation, but returns the question to the states. Some 13 already have so-called “trigger laws”, statutes banning or severely restricting abortion which go into effect automatically should Roe ever fall, and more than a dozen others are poised to enact similar restrictions. Reproductive rights in America will become a patchwork of regional legislation, subject to the whims of whichever Party controls the state, instead of a universally recognized human right.
The decision also opens the door to a review of other rights based on the “right to privacy” which underpinned Roe v Wade. Indeed, in his concurring opinion, ultraconservative Justice Clarence Thomas has already opined that the Court “should reconsider” Griswold (affirming contraception rights), Lawrence (legalizing all sex acts between consenting adults) and Obergefell (establishing same-sex marriage).
The rout was made possible by the three SCOTUS Justices appointed by Donald J. Trump, all of whom pledged in their confirmation hearings that Roe was a stare decisis precedent and the settled law of the land. Two of those seats, now occupied by Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett, were stolen from Democratic administrations by Mitch McConnell’s GOP-controlled Senate, making their holders thieves as well as liars.
The skies for the handing down of the decision vividly portray the earthy reality, and also reflect earlier turning points in the case, such as the oral arguments before the Supreme Court last December, and the leaked draft opinion this May.
The cosmos has been signaling trouble to come for Roe v Wade for quite some time now, with asteroids Roe and NOT (a general disqualifier and a symbol of reversal or block to progress) traveling within ten degrees of each other since September 2020, just months after Mississippi appealed the test case of Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization to the SCOTUS that June, following two lower court rulings against the state.
The pieces were moving on the celestial board, but the die wasn’t cast until asteroid Wade joined the fray, in square to Roe/NOT, actually coming to its direct station on December 1, 2021, the very day the SCOTUS heard oral arguments in the case. Asteroids Wade and Roe were exactly squared that day, from 14 Aries to 14 Capricorn, which also featured a Sun/Mercury conjunction at 9 and 10 Sagittarius (appropriate for oral arguments); asteroid Jackson and Uranus conjunct at 10 and 11 Taurus, suggesting controversy and a volatile response; and asteroid Dobson (closest to Dobbs) conjunct Mars at 20 and 21 Scorpio, signifying conflict and a brewing fight over the issues raised by the case.
When the draft opinion was leaked on May 2, a Sun/Uranus conjunction at 12 and 14 Taurus described its controversial nature and the explosion to follow. That the controversy would be based in a judicial ruling is shown by the Sun/Uranus trine to asteroid Justitia, named for the Roman goddess of justice, at 15 Capricorn, with asteroid Themis, her Greek counterpart, conjoined combative Mars at 15 and 13 Pisces respectively, on the rough midpoint of the Sun/Uranus-Justitia trine, sextile to each (Mars also rules surgical procedures such as abortions, further refining the issue in contention). The Moon at 7 Gemini conjoined Mercury at 2 Gemini, indicating the leaked document regarding women’s healthcare (both Moon-ruled), as well as asteroids Wade and Child at 8 and 12 Gemini, defining the ruling under review (Wade) and the core issue of childbirth (Child). With asteroid Roe at 20 Pisces conjoined not only Mars and Themis at 13 and 15 Pisces, but also asteroid NOT, Neptune, Jupiter and Venus at 23, 24, 28 and 29 Pisces, the stage was set for a confrontation (Mars) concerning the voiding (NOT) of the landmark legislation (Roe) guaranteeing women’s (Venus) reproductive freedom, stemming from a religious (Neptune) and political (Jupiter) decision by the SCOTUS (Themis).
Wade had subsequently backed off the square to Roe for several months after oral arguments, as the Justices deliberated, but returned to square Roe/NOT in early June, linking up with the Sun, while Jupiter, representing the judiciary generally and the SCOTUS in particular, joined Roe/NOT for the release of the decision on June 24th.
This pattern, with the Sun conjunct Wade at 3 and 5 Cancer, squared Jupiter/Roe/NOT at 6, 10 and 11 Aries respectively, becomes a tragic T-square when early Capricorn points are factored into the equation. Centaur Pholus at 5 Cap and TNO Quaoar at 6 Cap reiterate the abortion theme and the likely consequences of the decision. As I documented almost two decades ago in Maya del Mar’s Daykeeper Journal, Quaoar has a special affinity with reproductive issues, pro and con, while Pholus resonates to mass casualties from whatever cause. Certainly the death toll will rise among American women with this decision, via both unsafe or dangerous pregnancies that are forced to go to full term, and botched back-alley or home remedy abortions by women desperate to terminate an unwanted pregnancy in a state that has outlawed this.
I was unable to obtain an exact moment for the release of the decision, but SCOTUS rulings are generally announced after 10 AM, and the earliest reporting I could find was for 10:08, so I chose 10:05 AM EDT as the closest approximation for the chart, assuming a lag time of several minutes between announcement and posting.
Set for Washington, DC, this places Saturn at 24 Aquarius, representing restrictions and limitations as well as laws and the power of the State, closely conjoined the Descendant at 25 Aquarius, fundamentally altering the relationship (Descendant) of the government (Saturn) with half the population. The 25 Leo Rising is appropriate for the situation, with Leo ruling children and procreation. This theme is repeated by asteroid Child, which at 4 Cancer conjoins the spotlighting Sun and asteroid Wade.
The Moon at 13 Taurus, ruling healthcare, women and pregnancy, conjoins Uranus at 19 Taurus, ruling shocks and upsets, controversy and volatility, and these cluster over the 19 Taurus Midheaven, the focus of all eyes. Exact on the 19 Scorpio Nadir, the foundation of the situation, is asteroid Karma, suggesting ultimately being called to account for one’s actions, perhaps at the ballot box in 2022 and beyond. Also here is asteroid Pandora at 29 Scorpio, forming a T-Square with the Horizontal Axis and Saturn, representing the unleashing of unexpected consequences.
A number of questionable decisions were released this last week of the current SCOTUS term, in addition to the overturning of Roe v Wade, including a mandate for states to include private religious schools in the dispersal of public education funds, and a ruling that essentially legalizes the concealed carry of firearms in public nationally. This “fuzzy thinking” is reflected in an exact conjunction of asteroid Themis, named for the Greek goddess of justice, with Neptune, at 25 Pisces, known for clouding or obfuscating an issue, as well as having affinities with zealotry and fanaticism, especially in a religious context. The five black-robed SCOTUS “culture warriors” seeking to advance a Christian Dominionist theocracy have begun making good on that threat.
Also here in this stunning exact triple conjunction is asteroid Nemesis, a source of ruin or undoing. The conservative Justices are playing both parts in this Nemesis drama, dispensing what they see as divine retribution and justice while themselves becoming the target of disaffection and protest, leading potentially to their own downfall. Just as they are acting as nemeses to America’s childbearing population, their actions may come back to bite them in the end, enacting Nemesis’ urge for payback and revenge. Already, barely 25% of the US population sees the Court as impartial or nonpartisan, and that figure is likely to plummet in the aftermath of decisions like these, which are clearly based, not in law or precedent, but in the personal and political opinions of the Justices themselves.
The test case which opened the floodgates to Roe’s undoing, Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization, is seen in a T-Square from Themis/Neptune/Nemesis at its fulcrum to asteroids Jackson at 23 Gemini and Dobson (closest to Dobbs) at 21 Sagittarius. A Grand Cross is formed by asteroids Eurydike and Asclepius at 16 and 26 Virgo, indicating a nostalgic desire to return to a former “pure” state which has vanished beyond recall (Eurydike) and a connection to health care and surgical procedures (Asclepius, named for the Greek god of medicine). Also here is asteroid Thomas at 27 Virgo, for Associate Justice Clarence Thomas, whose concurring opinion opens wide the door for continued erosion of hard-won rights, especially among the LGBTQ+ community.
It’s a black day for freedoms in America, and looking like getting blacker.
By now we’ve all heard of the tragic events at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas last week, on May 24th, where Salvador Ramos killed 19 fourth-graders and two teachers, after shooting his grandmother. Ramos used two AR-15 assault-style weapons on his rampage, which he had purchased within days of his 18th birthday the week prior. It’s taken far too long for accurate details of the crime to emerge, with conflicting, not to say contradictory, reports about Ramos’ entry to the school, and a mystifying 40-minute delay in active response by law enforcement before terminating the gunman as a threat, exposing an astounding level of incompetence.
Over the past two decades, I’ve chronicled more of these types of stories than I care to remember, and normally I would approach this from the perspective of the day and the victims, but frankly, these details are just too disheartening, and the data load too overwhelming, to focus my attention and make sense of it all. So I decided to concentrate primarily on Salvador Ramos himself, and the natal cosmic factors which brought him to this point.
Born 16 May 2004 (no time available), Ramos’ chart is challenging in ways tailormade to prompt this type of atrocity. The Sun at 25 Taurus conjoins asteroid Gunn at 20 Taurus, homophone of gun. This is a sign that Ramos identifies closely with weaponry; guns form a central part of how he sees himself, acting as a means of self-expression, an avatar of his core being. One has only to look at his Instagram postings of his new toys and the almost sexual placement of the magazine in his lap to see how much he prizes his arsenal. The Sun also conjoins TNO Chaos at 3 Gemini, so Ramos saw himself as a source of disorder, confusion and anarchy, with a purpose of disseminating these qualities to the community at large.
The Sun anchors a Grand Cross composed of elements that put flesh onto the bones of his solar contacts, providing a roadmap for his actions at Robb Elementary. The close opposition to centaur Pholus at 24 Scorpio is perhaps the most powerful.
Pholus is named for a centaur friend of Heracles, one of only two “civilized” centaurs, the other being Chiron, and the rest of the band barely more than intelligent beasts. When Heracles was engaged upon his Fourth of Twelve Labors, the capture of the Erymanthian Boar, he took advantage of the proximity of Pholus’ cave during his journey to visit his old friend.
As a good host, Pholus offered the hero some meat and drink, but Heracles begged a taste of a large jar of wine which had been the gift of the god Dionysos to all the centaurs of the region, and was entrusted to Pholus’ care. Pholus was reluctant to grant Heracles’ request, but eventually yielded. Upon opening the jar, its heady aroma wafted through the surrounding forest, prompting the other centaurs, enraged by the violation of their joint property, to charge the cave.
Heracles drove them off, killing many with his arrows poisoned by the Hydra’s blood, and pursued them for miles. In his absence, Pholus began preparing the dead for burial, and, fascinated that such a small thing as Heracles’ arrowheads could bring down so great a creature as a centaur, he removed an arrow for further inspection. The weapon slipped from his grasp and penetrated his foot, its poison killing him instantly.
Astrologically, Pholus represents many things. Noted astrologer and centaur researcher Melanie Reinhart uses the key-phrase “the lid comes off”, referring to the uncorking of that wine that caused all the trouble, to express Pholus’ ability to shake things up quickly, and in a big way. Themes of poisoning, accidental death, being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and fatal fascination or curiosity all emerge, and all (save poison) have a bearing on this case, but for our purposes in defining its effects on Ramos’ psyche, the most potent aspect of his story is the emphasis on multiple deaths.
Pholus shows regularly in the charts of multiple casualties by whatever cause, but has been particularly active in the charts of mass shootings since 2008, when its extended conjunction with TNO Ixion began. Ixion is noted as the first murderer in Greek myth, and their union has given rise to the age of the multiple homicide. In a particularly unfortunate twist of cosmic timing, these two bodies will remain within ten degrees of each other for 35 years, until 2043, and then continue to reverberate in the psyches of billions of individuals born during their conjunction, for decades after they have separated, promulgating their deadly effects far into the foreseeable future.
In Ramos’ case, the attraction for a high kill count is apparent, and Pholus’ curiosity may also have affected his treatment of his victims after fatally shooting them. Reportedly, some of the children were so mutilated by gunshots as to be identifiable only by DNA; one can well imagine Pholus’ keen curiosity adding an element of inquisitiveness to Ramos’ atrocities, as he probed the full possibilities for destruction of his deadly playthings. Regardless, “the lid comes off” certainly seems to describe the suddenness of Ramos’ rampage and the violence it unleashed, and being in the wrong place at the wrong time is indicative of the random individuals he killed, none of whom were specifically targeted, just in his sights.
The crossbars of the Grand Cross yield further insights into Ramos’ motivations and how they were directed. Squaring the Sun from Aquarius are asteroids Icarus at 20, Tantalus at 24 and Rip at 26. Icarus refers to rash, reckless acts taken without heed for the consequences, a “shoot from the hip” (in this case, literally) mentality with no regard for others or the probable effect upon oneself. Note that Icarus exactly squares Gunn, for the reckless gunplay in which Ramos indulged, reportedly shooting at anyone who came in his way, even mourners at a funeral home across the street from the school.
Tantalus is a symbol of heinous crimes, for which he was punished by being chained in a lake in Hades, with fruit boughs overhanging. But Tantalus’ punishment was to experience eternal hunger and thirst, for whenever he reached for the fruit, the branches would sway up and out of his reach, and whenever he bent for a drink, the waters of the lake receded. Tantalus’ name has come down to us in the form of the word “tantalize”, meaning “to torment or tease with the sight or promise of something that is unobtainable.” Eerily, Tantalus’ most notable crime is one which resonates to Ramos’ specific actions, for he killed his own young son Pelops, cutting him to pieces to serve in a banquet for the gods, to test their omniscience. They saw through the ruse, and condemned Tantalus to his fate. Note that Tantalus exactly squares Pholus, directly uniting the themes of killing and mutilating children and multiple casualties.
Rip is an asteroid which functions reliably as a death indicator, in the form of the acronym “RIP”, “Rest In Peace”, a common tombstone inscription. Its inclusion in this pattern signifies death as a theme central to Ramos’ being (Sun), a part of how he sees himself.
The final arm of the Grand Cross is filled by asteroids Salvadoraguirre and Requiem, both at 21 Leo, and Robbia, at 25. Salvadoraguirre is one of two asteroids that can be taken to represent Salvador Ramos. There is no stand-alone Salvador asteroid, but two CNAs (Compound-Name Asteroids) which begin with that name; CNAs are asteroids comprised of first and last names strung together as one word (a common practice among astronomers when naming these objects), but can be separated into their component parts and used for either.
As squared his Sun, Salvadoraquirre follows the conventional placements most common for one’s own PNAs (Personal Named Asteroids), which typically aspect the Sun, Moon, Ascendant or Mercury in a natal chart. PNAs act as alternate foci for self-identity, mini-Suns, as it were. With asteroid Requiem, which is named for the funeral mass for the dead, exactly conjunct it, we have another indicator of the importance of the theme of death to Ramos’ self-image and identity. But Requiem is not an ordinary death indicator; it also carries the sense of a memorable death, or being remembered because of a connection to death, both of which apply in Ramos’ case.
The final point is asteroid Robbia, closest celestial marker to Robb, the name of the school where Ramos perpetrated his crimes. Note that Robbia is exactly squared the Sun, further embedding locales that resonate to this name into Ramos’ psyche, and making them a prime feature of his biography.
Having all these key factors linked with the Sun is perhaps enough to explain Ramos’ propensity for heinous acts, but there is much more to be revealed.
An opposition from Jupiter at 9 Virgo to Uranus at 6 Pisces suggests someone who seeks fame (Jupiter) via acts that are shocking, volatile or controversial (all Uranus), and sets the stage for asteroids to refine those propensities, producing this outcome. Uranus also rules shootings, and with it is asteroid Atropos at 11 Pisces, named for the mythic Greek Fate who severs the thread of life at death. Together, these spell “fatal shootings”. Also here is asteroid Carrozzo at 7 Pisces; Robb Elementary School lies at the corner of Old Carrizo Road and Geraldine Streets in Uvalde. The cosmos has provided the actual street address of the fatal shootings (we’ll also be looking at Geraldine in a moment).
A Grand Cross is formed, with squares to TNO Chaos at 3 Gemini, the pandemonium he unleashed there, and TNO Ixion with asteroid Texas, at 9 and 11 Sagittarius. This provides backdrop for the event, with Ixion named for the first murderer in Greek myth, and Texas as the general venue of the attack. Note that Ixion exactly squares Jupiter, another indicator of celebrity via homicide, while Texas exactly squares Atropos, again linking death and the Lone Star State.
Let’s take a look now at that second street name, Geraldine. There is a Geraldina asteroid, which at 13 Capricorn is at station, embedding its energies in Ramos’ psyche and exerting a strong pull toward a person or location with that, or a similar, name, and making it a key component of Ramos’ biography. Geraldina turned retrograde nine days before his birth, and is involved in a T-Square, opposing Mars (violent death, attacks, guns) at 5 Cancer conjoined Saturn (ancient lord of death) at 10 Cancer and asteroid Karma (Fate, the results of our actions) at 18 Cancer. At the fulcrum is asteroid Salvadorsanchez, our second CNA referent for Ramos, at 17 Aries.
So the name of the school itself, and the street intersection where it is located, all show prominently in Ramos’ chart, linked with death indicators and specific markers of himself.
Also at station are asteroids Lachesis at 20 Virgo and Osiris at 24 Virgo, both additional death indicators, enhancing that theme for Ramos. Lachesis is named for Atropos’ sister, the Fate who determines the span of life, while Osiris is named for the ancient Egyptian god of the dead. These square Pluto, modern lord of death and planetary ruler of homicide, at 21 Sagittarius, and together they form a Thor’s Hammer, a fated pattern similar to a Yod, by sesquiquadrate aspects to Mercury exactly conjoined asteroid Child at 0 Taurus. Here we see the first suggestion that children would be the focus of Ramos’ death obsession and homicidal tendencies, with Mercury ruling not only young children, but also primary education and teachers. Mercury/Child also widely squares asteroid Anubis at 8 Aquarius, named for the Egyptian deity governing funerary rites, another death indicator.
Let’s now take a look at the day of the massacre, which was also the day Salvador Ramos himself died. The revisionism of the official version of events has been staggeringly egregious, with such major elements as the presence or absence of a school security officer variously represented at various times. I’ve had to revise the chart for the event three times to keep pace with current timelines, but it seems, almost a week later, that the time of entry into the school has been confirmed as 11:33 AM CDT, and Ramos was shot to death at 12:50 PM CDT.
Before we dive into this, let’s backpedal a moment to the birth chart to explore the genesis of the day’s carnage, the initial violent act, when Ramos shot his grandmother Celia Gonzalez in the face before embarking on his rampage. Remarkably, Gonzales survived, but there are clear indicators in the nativity and the transit sky of Ramos’ intent to murder her.
Celia Gonzalez is represented celestially by asteroids Celian (closest to Celia) and Gonzalez (an exact match). Natal asteroid Celian at 25 Capricorn is also at station, indicating that his abuela was a pivotal influence in Ramos’ life, easily generating love or hate, possibly both in turn. Celian opposes natal asteroid Apophis at 26 Cancer, named for the ancient Egyptian personification of pure evil (note that Apophis is also closely sextile the natal Sun at 25 Taurus, further predisposing Ramos to malevolence). This could refer to her actual influence on Ramos’ life, his perception of her, or simply his enactment of that energy directed toward her. Remarkably, at her shooting, transit asteroid Gonzales had come to exactly conjoin natal Apophis, opposing natal Celian, and bringing transit asteroid Rip at 23 Cancer in tow. Transit asteroid Celian at 17 Virgo conjoined transit asteroid Gunn at 14 Virgo when Ramos shot her in the face.
Natal asteroid Gonzalez at 29 Pisces conjoins asteroid Nemesis at 4 Aries, a point representing retribution and vengeance, ruin or downfall. Again, this could represent her effect upon his life, his upon hers, or both. Gonzales opposes natal Osiris and Lachesis and widely squares natal Pluto. And once again, we witness the perfection of celestial timing: transit Mars at 29 Pisces for the shooting, ruling guns, violence and attacks, exactly conjoins natal Gonzalez.
To return to the event chart: at 11:33 AM, 8 Leo was rising in Uvalde, 8 Aquarius setting. That Descendant degree matches Ramos’ natal Anubis exactly. The Horizontal Axis also squares transit asteroid Salvadoraguirre at 8 Scorpio exactly, which is itself angular on the 3 Scorpio IC, representing the foundation of the situation. Transit asteroid Carrozzo at 29 Cancer (for the Old Carrizo Road location) had recently risen on the Ascendant and was still widely conjoined, but more closely conjunct Ramos’ natal Apophis at 26 Cancer, also highlighted by transit Rip at 23. Transit asteroid Tantalus at 27 Aries, that other indicator of heinous crimes, is still conjunct the 3 Taurus MC, the focus of all eyes, and is squared Carrozzo. It is the most elevated point in the chart, and conjoins transit TNO Eris at 24 Aries, a dwarf planet noted for representing disaffected persons, individuals who perceive themselves to have been wronged and are seeking redress (reportedly Ramos had dropped out of school the year before, after being repeatedly bullied for his clothes and his family’s poverty). Tantalus also forms a T-Square with Carrozzo and transit Pluto, modern lord of death, at 28 Capricorn. Asteroid Robbia, for Robb Elementary, falls at 19 Leo, and will pass over the Ascendant as the protracted event unfolds.
The Sun at 3 Gemini is an exact match for Ramos’ natal TNO Chaos, and is still within orb of his natal Sun, helping to explain the timing chosen for the chaotic attack. Bringing focus to Ramos for the day, setting him up in the solar spotlight, for good or ill, is transit asteroid Salvadorsanchez, conjunct the Sun from 28 Taurus. Transit Mercury, ruling children, education and teachers, is retrograde at 29 Taurus, conjoined the transit Sun, the natal Sun and natal asteroid Gunn. Mercury also squares Damocles, the unseen threat or looming disaster, at 2 Pisces.
Mercury, Salvadorsanchez and the Sun are further involved in a Grand Cross with transit Damocles, which conjoins transit asteroid Geraldina (the school’s cross-street) at 10 Pisces, also squared transit asteroid Anubis at 9 Virgo and widely opposed transit asteroid Texas at 13 Sagittarius. This feeds into the natal Grand Cross of Jupiter (with transit Anubis exactly conjoined it), Uranus/Atropos/Carrozzo, Chaos and Texas, with transit Gunn at 14 Virgo also joining this pattern.
The transit Moon, ruling early childhood experience, falls at 27 Pisces, conjoined Neptune (victims) at 25 Pisces and Mars (guns, attacks, violent death) at 29 Pisces; these square a pairing of asteroids Child and Osiris at 21 and 25 Gemini, combining children and death, with transit Child exactly opposed Ramos’ natal Pluto, modern lord of death, at 21 Sagittarius.
Transit Saturn, ancient lord of death, exactly squares the natal Sun from 25 Aquarius, and transit Icarus, the tendency to act rashly or recklessly, is also in square, from 19 Aquarius, just one degree shy of a Return to its natal degree, reinforcing its natal tendencies. The transit Ixion/Pholus conjunction, the underpinning of this and all similar crimes, currently at 2 and 6 Capricorn respectively, is being augmented and increased by transit Jupiter at 2 Aries, inflating the situation, and itself conjoining Ramos’ natal asteroid Nemesis at 4 Aries, that tendency toward ruin and revenge. Another T-Square is formed with Ixion/Pholus opposed Ramos’ natal Mars/Saturn at 5 and 10 Cancer, squared by transit Jupiter.
There is one stationary asteroid in this chart, transit Young at 16 Capricorn, squaring transit Apophis at 14 Aries. This reflects the tender age (Young) of the victims so heartlessly destroyed in this irredeemably evil atrocity (Apophis).
When law enforcement finally broke through the locked classroom door and fatally shot Salvador Ramos at 12:50 PM CDT, the Ascendant had moved to 25 Leo, exactly conjunct Ramos’ natal asteroid Robbia, also conjoined that exact Salvadoraguirre/Requiem pairing at 21 Leo, and exactly squared his 25 Taurus Sun. Saturn was exactly conjoined the Descendant at 25 Aquarius, splitting the difference between natal Tantalus and Rip, at 24 and 26 Aquarius. These transit placements activated the natal solar Grand Cross of Sun/Gunn, Pholus, Tantalus/Rip and Salvadoraguirre/Requiem/Robbia, fulfilling its deadly potential in a hail of bullets, amid a sea of victims.
As noted in the introduction, I couldn’t bear to chronicle the 19 innocent young lives lost in the tragedy, but the story of one teacher who died protecting her students caught my attention, and I’d like to close with this.
Irma Garcia, 48, was a Fourth-Grade teacher, and had been at Robb Elementary for 23 years. She married her high school sweetheart, Jose (“Joe”) Garcia, and they were anticipating their Silver Wedding Anniversary this year. Two days following her death, after leaving a memorial for his wife at the school, Joe Garcia returned home and died of a heart attack, overwhelmed by grief. Their four children, aged 12 to 23, had lost both parents within a few days.
Exact matches exist for all three of their names; on the day Irma Garcia died, asteroid Irma exactly conjoined transit asteroid Anubis at 9 Virgo, with transit asteroid Gunn at 14 Virgo, in a Grand Cross with the transit Sun, Geraldina and Texas. Transit asteroid Jose at 20 Sagittarius opposed transit asteroid Osiris at 24 Gemini, T-squared transit Mars at 29 Pisces. And transit asteroid Garcia at 29 Aries, representing them both, conjoined transit asteroid Tantalus at 27 Aries, squaring transit Pluto at 28 Capricorn and T-Squared transit Carrozzo at 29 Cancer.
Both husband and wife, united in death by markers of the evil, violence and murder which took their lives, and the location where it occurred. What more can be said?
