When considering partnership Astrology and compatibility, I’ve always maintained that Mercury is a highly underrated planet.

It somehow gets lost in the shuffle. When many of us ask if we’re “compatible” with another individual, we seem to go straight to the Venus and Mars portion of the show, which would suggest the physical attraction,  links of passion, and the SEX.

However, upon further investigation into our relationships, we start to hear things like ; “He/She isn’t really talking about anything” or “I don’t understand how  He/She thinks.” Now, we’ve opened the door for Mercury.

In relationships (and generally) Mercury is the planet which symbolizes communication.  The “winged messenger” resides over the left brain logical processing of information, the classification of facts,  our analytical faculties and speech. The energy of Mercury is discriminating, as it reduces the whole to parts in order decipher meaning.

When two people get together, what they think about and the manner in which thoughts and ideas are processed can play a critical role in the functioning (or lack thereof) in the relationship. After all, communication is one of the primary ways in which we establish our connections with others.

If the placement of the two  individuals’ Mercury placements form a tense, or challenging relationship, they may be tested to see how flexible they are in understanding and accommodating the way the other thinks and processes things.

“I know you believe you understand what you think I said. But I ‘m not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.” (Source: “Meta-Talk”, by Gerald Nierenberg)

Yeah….. something like that…..

The harmonious, or free flowing alignment of Mercury between two people suggests an easy rapport. Someone that we feel at ease speaking with, and usually what we would call “like -minded”. There is a mutual interest in each other and a curiosity in regard to the subject matter that both people are presenting.

There’s also likely to be a mutual agreement on the concept of learning and exactly what part it plays in the every day experience of the two people. Whether they’re on one accord about the beauty of “youthful wonder” or the ease of ignoring social issues, there’s still an understanding.

In thinking about the part that Mercury plays in our relationships, we may want to continue to examine what type of partner may suit us intellectually.

What do we like to discuss? What qualifies as mental stimulation? What value do we place on the “life of the mind?” What have we found to be the most effective ways to communicate or connect with another human being?

Think about it.
